Dec. 13, 1945 - Sept. 12, 2008

CULBERTSON -- Kathy Ann (Kern) Orr went home to be with the Lord after a long illness. She died Friday, Sept. 12, 2008, at Hi Park Nursing Home in Red Wing, Minn.

Kathy was born Dec.13,1945 at St. Catherine's Hospital in McCook, Neb., to her parents, Everett and June (Lorimor) Kern of Culbertson, Neb.

Kathy grew up on her parent's farm outside of Culbertson. She was baptized in the Trinity United Methodist Church.

Kathy was a happy little girl and loved birds and animals and was a horsewoman who cared for and groomed her own horse from elementary school through high school.

She inherited her father's musical ability and played in the high school band, sang in trios and was the organist for her church. She graduated from Culbertson High School in 1964. She went to college and graduated from the Methodist School of Nursing in 1969, as a registered nurse.

She met and married Ronald R. Cartwright of Memphis, Tenn., in 1969 and worked as a nurse at St. Jude Children's Hospital. They had two children, daughter Kelli Jo in 1972, and a son, Christopher Jon, in 1978. Following their separation in 1980, Kathy moved to Denver, Colo., where she worked as a Nursing Administrator for a nursing home.

She met James M. Orr in Denver and the two of them married in 1984 at Estes Park, Colo. They lived for a time in Evergreen, Colo., before moving to New York and then later to Minnesota.

It was in Evergreen that a cancerous tumor was discovered in her brain. Surgery and treatment provided her with additional happy years and allowed her to raise her children and to spend additional years with her husband, family and friends.

Kathy was a high energy, high spirited woman who loved to cook and entertain and did so often regardless of the long hours she worked as a registered nurse. Kathy was extroverted, and would always give you her honest opinion. She loved her children and enjoyed life with her husband, Jim and always enjoyed being with her parents and siblings whom she dearly loved.

She was active in the Hilltop Fellowship Church of Millville, Minn.

She leaves behind her beloved husband, James M. Orr of Lake City, Minn., daughter, Kelli Cartwright of Lake City, Minn., and son, Christopher Cartwright and his wife, Stephanie of Elkin, N.C.

She also leaves behind her mother, June Kern of Culbertson; her brother, Kim Kern and his wife, Lana of Tulsa, Okla.; their son and her nephew, JD Kern and his wife, Kelly of Nashville, Tenn.; and her brother, Bud Kern and his wife, Penny of Castle Rock, Colo.

Kathy was a wonderful woman, who was devoted to her family and friends. She will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m., Monday, Sept. 22, 2008, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Culbertson, with the Rev. Cory Jenkins officiating. Interment of her cremains will be in the Culbertson Cemetery.

Memorials may be given in her name and sent to Herrmann Funeral Home in McCook.

Herrmann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
