ARAPAHOE -- Harold Foster Smith, 84, died Thursday (Sept. 4, 2008), at the C.A. Mues Good Samaritan Center in Arapahoe.
He was born in Utica, Kan., on Feb. 1, 1924, to William and Grace (Smith) Smith, and grew up in the Utica area.
On June 12, 1944, he married Juanita N. "Nita" Hager. They made their home near Albert, Kan.
He worked in the elevator and was a caretaker for the cemeteries around Great Bend and Albert. In the early 1970s the couple moved to Arapahoe, where they became caretakers and started a grave opening business. Harold and Nita took care of 11 cemeteries in Nebraska including Holbrook, Arapahoe and many country and church cemeteries in the area. He also worked for the Faw Motor Company, driving and doing odd jobs for Cal and Matt Faw.
He was preceded in death by his wife Nita on April 7, 2007; two sons, Darrell Smith and Gordon Smith: brothers, Ivan and Alvin Smith; and a sister, Inez Guthrie.
Survivors include his son Keith Smith of Hoisington, Kan.; a daughter-in-law, Shiela Smith of Albert, Kan.; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grand child.
Memorial services were today at the C.A. Mues Good Samaritan Center Chapel with the Rev. Michael Flurry officiating. Inurnment will be in the Utica Cemetery in Utica at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the Good Samaritan Center in Arapahoe.
