BARTLEY -- Miriam J. Smith, 86, of Bartley died Tuesday (Aug 12, 2008) at Cambridge Manor.
She was born in Bartley on Feb 26, 1922, to Joseph H. and Viola M. (Smith) Smith. She attended and graduated from Bartley High School in 1939. She attended McCook College for one year and then graduated after one year at Lincoln School of Business.
She was on a Bartley softball team and played some on the college team in Lincoln. She also drove a bus in Lincoln.
She joined the U.S. Marines in August 1943 and served her country for two years. She worked as an airplane mechanic at El Toro, Calif. She was discharged in December of 1945. She stayed in California after her discharge and worked for a drafting firm until her retirement.
She returned to Bartley in 1980, to be with her mother. She lived in Bartley until moving to the Cambridge Manor.
She was a member of the Eastern Star, the William Wight Post 245 of the American Legion, the Legion Auxiliary and the Kemper United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include her brother, Edward "Lad" and wife, Beverly Smith of Bartley and a sister, Josephine and husband, Richard Behrends of St. Louis, Mo., and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at Lockenour-Jones Mortuary in Cambridge on Friday at 10:30 a.m., with the Rev. David Rowe officiating. Interment will be in the Bartley Cemetery. Military honors will be presented by the William Wight Post of Bartley. The Dorcas Chapter of the Eastern Star will conduct a committal service at the mortuary.
