MNB Seniors season ends at B-6 area tournament

LEXINGTON -- The McCook National Bank Seniors baseball season came to an end at the B-6 Area American legion Tournament at Lexington.

A first-round loss to Kearney County-Minden (11-6) pushed the MNB Seniors into the loser's bracket, where the local nine earned wins over Gothenburg (7-6 in 12 innings) and Hershland (11-7) before falling to Holdrege (7-4).

In the loss to Kearney County, an offensive drought by the top of the order coupled with untimely errors in the feld led to the loss to Minden. Jeff Lorentz was tagged with the loss.

First baseman Cody Broomfield went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Center fielder Dillon Goltl was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Jackson Johnson, who along with teammate Colton Cochran will play in Saturday's sixth annual Kiwanis All-Star Classic in Wahoo, started on the mound and worked 5 1/3 innings.

Adam Kruger relieved Johnson and worked 1 2/3 innings.

Mike Grabowski earned the win, working the final five innings.

He limited Gothenburg to zero runs on one hit and fanned five.

Johnson, Grabowski and Broomfield each were 3-for-6 at the plate. Catcher Austin Larson was 2-for-6. Grabowski was credited with three RBIs.

In the win over Hershland, Lorentz and Grabowski combined to allow four hits and two earned runs while striking out five.

Johnson went 3-for-4, Grabowski 2-for-5 with one RBI, Broomfield was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and Goltl went 2-for-4.

A combination of errors and mental mistakes led to a five-run fourth inning for Holdrege and put the MNB Seniors in a deficit they could not overcome.

Jackson started and worked 3 1/3 innings.

He allowed three earned runs on seven hits and struck out two.

Grabowki worked the final 3 2/3 innings.

He did not allow a run, gave up one hit and struck out five.

Cochran, Shane Wallen and Goltl each went 2-for-4.

The Seniors finished with a 15-18 record.

Equipment check-in for the Seniors and First Central Bank Juniors is 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the lower shelter house at Kelly Park.
