Two incidents over the weekend involved one dog attacking and killing another dog, while in another neighborhood a man was bit while riding a bicycle.

The pitbull was impounded by police and the owners, who live nearby, were cited for harboring a vicious dog, Brown said.
The Yorkie was killed in the attack. Cribbs said the pitbull had exhibited vicious behavior in the past by growling and snapping at the Yorkie whenever the smaller dog came out into the yard and was grateful none of her children were hurt Saturday.
"I have kids of my own and I was babysitting, so we had kids all over," she said.
According to Red Willow County Court personnel, a person who is charged with having a vicious dog is seen by the County Court Judge. At that point, the judge decides if the owner of the dog is fined, the animal euthanized or if other measures should be taken.
In another instance, on the 900 block of East Fifth at about 10:30 p.m., police were called when a male riding a bicycle was bit by a dog in the area, Brown said. The bite broke the skin and the ambulance was called, but the victim declined to go to the hospital. Officers captured the dog and placed the dog inside the enclosed porch of the owners. Charges are pending, Brown said. He did not say what kind of dog was involved.
Brown said incidents involving dog attacks have seemed to increased the past months and that police are monitoring the situation.
"We're hearing more about vicious dog activity but much of the time that includes only one or two breeds," he said. "If more incidents continue, we'll examine that. This is something the police department is definitely paying attention to."
There has been no serious discussion of any kind of ordinance banning a certain breed of dog, Brown said, but if the frequency of dog attacks increase, that would be up to the city council to decide if an ordinance was in order.
Current city ordinance states that a dog that habitually shows a dangerous or ferocious disposition must be constrained by a leash no longer than six feet.

I think you're right, it just became law on that Friday.
Amy
Didn't know the legislature was in session????
Perhaps it was passed last session and just became law?
I heard yesterday from the people involved that the pitbull involved lived with a 3yr child and had never had any problems. I also heard that the yorkie had just been let out of the house. It was really unexpected for the pit to go through 2 fences. I guess it's just a series of unfortunate events.
Speaking from personal experience, the meanest dog I ever met was a Chow / Lab x. I've known a few agressive little dogs as well including a miniature poodle which is supposed to be one of the more docile breeds. Chihuahua's have a tendency to be very owner protective and territorial. Pits are also very territorial. As for euthanizing the owners, I'm sure Lori's recieved lots of teasing about that type-o but grammer check doesn't catch everything.
She might also want to correct that last paragraph. The leash law is for all dogs not just the aggressive ones. Every dog owner should read the details on the new bill LB1055 that was passed last friday. Things will be changing. Hopefully for the better.
I agree that not all Pit Bulls are mean, and I think it's interesting that the breed of dog from the second attack wasn't mentioned. That kind of reporting only adds to the bad reputation that Pits have, in my opinion.
Why are people always picking on Pit Bulls? I'll bet there are plenty of stories regarding Labs and Golden Retrievers. The paper just hides those stories on the back pages. Right! Pit Bulls can be dangerous to humans and animals a like. They are born with the tools to be what they are. While it is only the bad ones we hear about, nine times out of ten it is the breed Pit Bull associated with these incidents. Owners of these animals need to take the lead in protecting society from these animals unless they want the public to decide on their own that "the only good Pit Bull is a dead one".
My God all of you people are worried about the pit bulls, I say we need to be careful about what the county judge will do to the owners because according to the "paper version" delivered tonight, the judge can rule for euthanasia for the owner. But perhaps it would clean up the gene pool! Come on Amy a Yorkie against a pit bull, give me a break, if the pit bull was being aggressive towards other dogs or humans, and then kills the Yorkie,it needs to go bye bye!
Any dog can be mean through training, teasing or just by the breed. People have to take into consideration about what they have and what they intend to do with the dog. Some don't care and some do. Most of the cities around have troubles with pit bulls, rotweilers, and mixed breeds with certain breeds in them. There should be an ordinance against all types of dogs that are bred for fighting or being mean. German Shepherds and dobermans can be in that catagory also. This is a touchy situation. If the dogs are known to be agressive, then proper means are needed for them.
Your right about a few things, not all pit's are bad dogs. On that I agree. I agree that owners make those dogs mean (sometimes). Sometimes dogs are just born that way regardless of their breed. It's called responsible breeding. Don't breed mean dogs or dogs with a tendency to be fear biters. I've know quite a few yorkies as well and I wonder if the yorkie was antagonizing the pitbull. They've been known to do that. Dogs are beautiful animals in all the things they do and it's us humans who screw them up whether we spoil them or teach them to attack.
I know a lot of pit bulls that are nice and never hurt a child. It is the owners that have pit bulls, you need to worry about not the dogs. Some owners think that they need to make their dogs mean, just because they are pit bulls and they think it fun. Don't take it out on these poor dogs, take it out with the owners. Its not just pit bulls and its all dogs. Anybody with a dog can be dangerous. Oh my its a pit bull its mean. Even little dogs are mean, I know because I was biten by a Dash Hound and it draw blood. Was that dog got put down no, why because the owners had money and they knew the cops. The cops put dogs down, who ever the dog owners are that would mean anyone that had trouble with the law. But I am saying not all pit bulls are mean. I expect the court put down all dogs that are dangerous or ferocious. So if the city council decide to ban pit bulls, they better ban all dogs. Because its not right and I don't care what people think.
