ATWOOD -- Naida Lorraine (Hawes) Townsend, 86, died Tuesday (July 15, 2008) at her home in Atwood.
She was born Dec. 18, 1921, at DeWitt to Carl and Myrtle Lindquist Hawes. She attended Beatrice Nebraska Schools graduating in 1939. After graduation she went to work for the telephone company and was working on Dec. 7, 1941, when Pearl Harbor was bombed. She later reminisced about how the entire switchboard lit up at that time.
She moved to Atwood with her children in 1963. She was a homemaker and worked several jobs simultaneously to provide for her family.
She married Bob Townsend in July of 1972. They made their home in Atwood, where she worked at the Rawlins County Sheriff's office until she retired.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Harold and grandson, Dan Trail.
Survivors include her husband, Bob; children, Linda and husband, Joe Cunningham of Overland Park, Kan., Susan and husband, Gordon Brown of Holdrege, Mary and husband, Richard Reimer of North Platte, Mike and wife, Deb Fanders of Atwood and Jane Miller of Denver, Colo.; 14 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Services and interment will be private.
Visitation is today until 8 p.m., at Williams Funeral Home in Atwood.
Memorials may be given in her name to the Atwood Second Century Fund.
