Lawrence Massacre film to premiere on Saturday in Atwood

ATWOOD -- Lone Chimney Films will premiere its latest documentary, Bloody Dawn: The Lawrence Massacre at the Jayhawk Theatre in Atwoodat 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door for $5. Several of those involved in the filming of this documentary will be attending this event, including the book's author, Thomas Goodrich and the director of the film, Ken Spurgeon.

Along with the film, the Jayhawk has planned several other activities. Mr. Goodrich, will present a commentary on the film at the Aberdeen Steak House on Friday, at 8 p.m. A Freewill donation will be accepted. If desired, dinner reservations may be made by calling (785) 626-3740. After the 3 p.m. showing, all attendees are invited to a "Meet and Greet" the Lone Chimney Film crew at the Aberdeen Steak House. Bloody Dawn: The Lawrence Massacre is based on historian Thomas Goodrich's book of the same title. Goodrich acted as an historical advisor for the film and provided commentary for it. Other historians appearing in the documentary include Dr. Craig Miner of Wichita State University and author of the book, Kansas: a History of the Sunflower State, 1854-2000, and military historian Fred Chiaventone. The film is narrated by Buck Taylor, who starred in the long-running television series Gunsmoke and has appeared in numerous feature films.

Lone Chimney Films Inc. is a not-for-profit company dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of Kansas and the Midwest through documentary film. Lone Chimney's first feature-length documentary, Touched by Fire: Bleeding Kansas, 1854-1861, was released in 2005 and aired on Wichita, Salina, and Topeka PBS affiliates. In addition to Bloody Dawn: The Lawrence Massacre, Lone Chimney is currently in the pre-production stage of its next two projects, a history of the early aviation industry in Wichita, and the follow-up to Bloody Dawn: The Lawrence Massacre.

my family member was major leroy j beam who lost 17 of his 22 recrutes who was encamped just in side of lawerence when the massacre took place major beam left the day before to get guns and supplies for his recrutes. when he was awayes out he saw the smoke from town and just thought it was a grass fire. he was major of the 15th kansas calvery
