HERNDON -- Gregory Matthew Pennington, 53, died Sunday (May 18, 2008), at his home in Herndon.
He was born June 8, 1954, to Norman and Esther Pennington and grew up in Arvada, Colo., where he attended the first school in Jefferson County for Downs Syndrome children.
In 1972, he moved to Carmel House in Boulder, Colo., a group home for handicapped children. He had a variety of jobs and enjoyed horseback riding and attending Colorado University football games and rodeos.
In 1993 he moved in with his sister, Ann and brother-in-law, Alan, becoming Mat, Val and John's babysitter, a job he did very well. In 2002, he moved with his sister's family to Herndon.
He was preceded in death by his father, Norman; and his grandparents.
Survivors include his mother, Esther Pennington of Herndon; his sisters, Mary Rushing of Zihuatenejo, Mexico, and Ann and husband, Alan Solko of Herndon; a brother, Mark and wife, Connie Pennington of Arvada; six nephews; two nieces; and one great-nephew.
A parish vigil and rosary will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the St. Mary's Assumption Church in Herndon with the Rev. Galen Long officiation. A Mass of Christian burial will follow at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery.
Visitation is today until 8 p.m., at Williams Funeral Home of Atwood.
Memorials may be directed to the donor's choice or to the Atwood PDC or the Association for Retarded Citizens.
