OMAHA -- The McCook High School boys track team, led by senior Sam Frazier's first-place performance in the discus, tied for 22nd place in Nebraska Class B at the state meet with 12 points.

Frazier's first-place toss was 154 feet.

"We didn't do as well as we had hoped at the state track meet," said McCook boys co-coach Tom Sughroue.

"You always have high hopes when you head into the state meet. We just didn't do what we had hoped to do. It was not for lack of effort, ability, or determination. Things just didn't go our way.

"Saturday was a better day for us. Having Sam Frazier win the discus was the high light of the track meet for the Bison boys.

"With the wind not doing him any favors for most of the competition, on his fifth throw the wind did subside just a bit. Giving Sam the chance to have a good throw.

"Sam did a great job of taking advantage of the opportunity having his best throw of the event. Sam's throw of 154 feet was enough for him to win the event.

"Sam does such a good job of preparing himself both mentally and physically that very little phases him as he competes.

"Once he getting into his competitive zone, he is extremely focused. At the state meet that is exactly what you have to be."

McCook placed seventh in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:30.82.

"Dillon Goltl, Cory Gaston, Matt Berry and Jimmy Barron did a great job of competing," Sughroue said. "Having them run well in the relay was a great way to finish out the state track meet."

Among those not placing for the Bison boys were J.D. Stone, shot put, 48-7 1/4; the 400-meter relay, 44.377; Cory Gaston, 110 and 300 hurdles, 15.693 and disqualified; and Berry, 100-meter dash, 11.558.
