MHS seniors are 'Free Birds'

Monday, May 12, 2008

After years of taking tests and toeing the line, seniors at McCook Senior High threw their caps in the air and sprayed silly string at their graduation ceremony at sunny Weiland Field Sunday.

McCook School System Superintendent David Schley opened the commencement ceremony and commended the class for their talents, work ethic and "strong sense of caring for each other."

Student speakers included Renetta Rawlings, Cassie Olson, Anthony Bieck, Nikea Grove and Carson Kain.

Selected by their peers for the Bison Award were Cassie Olson and Carson Kain. The award is given to two students who show school leadership, loyalty, service and promote positive rapport within the student body.

Students recognized for having straight-A's throughout high school were Cassie Olson, Renetta Rawlings and Chris Wilson.

MHS Principal Jerry Smith identified the 62 students whose grades were 3.0 or above.

Smith commented later that the Class of 2008 was "a great class."

"Every year they get better and better," said Smith, whose oldest son, Alex, graduated this year. "You watch these kids grow up through the years and you lose a little bit of yourself when they graduate."

Musical selections performed by the Senior High School Choir, under the direction of Sandra Weigel, were "Show Me The Way," "Let It Be," and "Hey Jude" and the McCook Senior High Band played "Pomp and Circumstance."

The class roll was read by Smith and diplomas were presented by members of the McCook School Board.

Class officers elected for 2008 are Cory Gaston, president, Carson Kain, vice president and Monique Monzon, secretary.

Seniors chose the white lily for their class flower and red, black and silver for class colors. For the class motto, seniors chose, "The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones that do." "Free Bird," by Lynyrd Skynyrd, was the class song.

Junior Ushers were Audrie Krepcik, Michael Grabowski and Joanna Bryant.

I'm sorry - Lil_husker_girl - but, were you a graduate on Sunday? If not - then it's really not your event to judge. So they were acting a little childish -- guess what - that is because they are 17 and 18 year olds - they are kids!

On your graduation, I'm sure nobody told you how you needed to celebrate. These kids are the ones who put in 13 years of work -- let them celebrate however the want!

Let's not forget who's day that was. Yes, thank you to all of the guests and alumni that came (I myself am an alum and traveled). My sister graduated and I couldn't care less that she walked across the stage barefoot... or that a beachball may have blocked a picture or two. I was simply happy and proud to see that she was happy, and moving on to another part of her life.

When I graduated, I wanted to celebrate too... it was my day. There wasn't anyone hurt by the flying beachballs or sillystring... or anything else for that matter. If you didn't like it... then don't come back.

Congrats graduates, you deserved every bit of your celebration!

I would agree with your statement, "These kids have worked hard for 13 years." Is this anyway to act? I THINK NOT!

I am not asking for people to cry and carry on, but have some dignity and respect!!!

"Graduation seems to be a stressful time and a little laughter helps the moment." I agree about this comment, but what about; "barefeet", "beach balls", "silly string", inappropriate dress, and "decorated" mortar boards.

Grow UP!!

As a parent of a graduating senior from a different school. I would have loved to see that happen here. These kids have worked hard for 13 years. They are ready for the rest of their lives. As a parent it would be nice to see a little light-heartedness instead of a bunch of tears. Graduation seems to be a stressful time and a little laughter helps the moment. Congratulations to all the graduating seniors and I think it's great that MHS lets the kids have this as their time. Who doesn't want to see their child happy and smiling.....

I was disguisted by the outright rudeness, childish behavior, and immature acts that the 2008 Senior Graduating Class and the McCook City Schools allowed at the graduation on Sunday! The "barefeet" walking across the stage, "beach balls" being tossed, thrown and/or kicked, "silly string", inappropriate dress by the choir, band and seniors, and lastly the "decorated" mortar boards.

What has High School Graduation came to? Is this a ceremony? Is this a party?

I realize that it is in fact the ending and the beginning for our young people, but I think that McCook Public Schools MUST take a stand and REQUIRE the respect and dignity back into the ceremony!!

Step back people and look at the ignorance that was portrayed on Sunday for out-of-town guests, family, friends and ALUMNI!!

I hope that McCook Public Schools and the McCook Board of Education will do somehting about this issue. I hope this action NEVER happens again!!!!

P.S. How would feel about this ~~ you are a parent (of a senior) and you are taking a photograph of them receiving their diploma and there is a beach ball blocking your child's head?

** Think about that one!?!!?!? **
