SCOTTSBLUFF -- The McCook High School girls track team placed second and the Bison boys fourth at the Nebraska Class B-6 district meet Thursday at Scottsbluff.

The Bison will send several representatives to the state meet May 16-17 at Omaha's Burke Stadium.

Scottsbluff won the Class B-6 girls team title with 144 points, followed by McCook 107.5, Valentine 58.5, Alliance 55, Gering 54, Gothenburg 48, Sidney 32, Ogallala 18, Chadron 7 and Gordon-Rushville 3.

Gering edged out Scottsbluff 93-90 for the Class B-6 boys district title. Ogallala was third with 75, followed by McCook 66, Gothenburg 62, Chadron 45, Alliance 31, Sidney 29, Gordon-Rushville 17 and Mitchell 14.

McCook freshman Jessa Sughroue was a triple gold medal winner. She won the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.1 seconds and the 800 with a time of 2:21.1.

Sughroue also ran the anchor leg on the first-place 1600-meter relay team, which posted a time of 4:07,7. Tara Powell led off the relay and was followed by Kali Lyons and Joanna Bryant.

Sughroue also anchored the 3200-meter relay team that placed second with a time of 10:00.9. Powell led off and was followed by Bryant and Haley Harpham.

McCook's Shelby Woitaszewski won the first-place gold medal in the 100-meter high hurdles with a time of 15.6.

Korgan was second in the 100-meter dash and Austin Wilson fourth with times of 12.6 and 12.9 seconds. Korgan was also the runnerup in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.2.

McCook's Danae McCorkle and Jayde Aufrecht placed 2-3 in the pole vault. McCorkle cleared 10 feet, 6 inches and Aufrecht cleared 10-2.

Kali Lyons placed third in the long jump with a mark of 15-10 1/2. Kelsee Meissner was third in the shot put with a toss of 40-4 1/4.

For the McCook boys, senior Sam Frazier won the gold medal in the discus with a throw of 148-10.

J.D. Stone was second in the shot put with a toss of 51-1 1/4.

McCook junior Matt Berry placed second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.0 seconds.

McCook senior Cory Gaston placed third in the 110-meter high hurdles and 300-meter intermediate hurdles with times of 14.9 and 40.4 seconds.

McCook's 1600-meter relay team of Dillon Goltl, Gaston, Berry and Jimmy Barron placed second with a time of 3:29.8.

The Bison placed fourth in the 400-meter relay and 3,200-meter relay with times of 44.1 and 9:03. The 3,200-meter relay did not qualify for state.

The 400-meter relay team consisted of Andy Smith, Goltl, Berry and Tyrone Sellers. The 3,200-meter relay team consisted of Barron, Spencer Gillen, Connor Larson and Brendan Funk.

"After a 4 1/2 hour ride to Scottsbluff, we performed well," said McCook boys coach Tom Sughroue. "We qualified eight boys in seven events. Cory Gaston had a very good day. He had a career day in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles.

"As a coaching staff, we were pleased with the way our boys competed. You are always disappointed when kids don't qualify for the state meet, especially those that are right on the bubble going in. We had several of those on the day.

"We as coaches hope to not have that happen. but you learn to expect a few. We as a coaching staff did as much as we could do."

H Southern Valley girls capture Class C-9 title -- The Southern Valley girls captured the team title at the Class C-9 district meet Thursday at Franklin.

The Eagle girls scored 119.5 points to outdistance runnerup Alma by 28.5 points.

The Southern Valley boys placed sixth with 45 points.

Kirstie Sheneman won the 100- and 200-meter dashes with times of 13.0 and 27.2.

The Eagles won the 400-meter relay with a time of 52.5. The relay featured Justina Snider, Christine Bohl, Allison Hunt and Sheneman.

The Eagles also won the 3,200-meter relay team, posting a time of 10:29. The relay consisted of Cassie Brooks, Molly Glur, Allie Kuhl and Hunt.

The Southern Valley 1,600-meter relay team of Bohl, Abby Schoen, Snider and Sheneman placed second with a time of 4:22.8.

Southern Valley junior Becky Rison won the discus with a throw of 105-2.

Hennessey Hogeland was second in the triple jump with a mark of 33-5 1/2. Snider was the runnerup in the 100-meter high hurdles and 300-meter low hurdles with times of 16.1 and 49.7.

On the boys side, Southern Valley's D.J. Rison was second in the shot put with a toss of 44-11 1/2.

The Southern Valley 3,200-meter relay team of Drew Witte, Cody Sellers, Richard McDonald and Dustin Miller placed second with a time of 9:12.8.

The Southern Valley 400-meter relay team of Witte, Seth Gustafson, Andre McQuiston and Zach Nielsen finished third with a time of 45.8.

The Southern Valley 1,600-meter relay team of Nielsen, McQuiston, Mitch Schoenfelder and Miller was fifth with a time of 3:45.8.
