OGALLALA -- The McCook High School girls tennis team wrapped up the regular season with a dual at Ogallala Thursday.
The meet marked the final tune-up for the Bison before the Nebraska State Tennis Tournament next week (May 15-16) at the Lincoln Tennis Center.
"We should be in contention for a couple of seeds (at state) in No. 1 doubles and No. 2 doubles," said McCook tennis coach Matt Wiemers.
Varsity Matches
No. 1 Singles
Brianna Watkins
lost to E. Huckfeldt, 6-4, 6-1
"Brianna had a tough day on the court and dropped a straight set match against a good opponent," Wiemers said.
"She has played some great tennis this season and we will wait to see who she draws Monday for the state meet next week.
"Brianna has compiled a 24-19 record this season. She will have a great opportunity to advance in the tournament next week.
No. 2 Singles
Hanah Swanhorst
lost to M. Abbott, 6-2, 6-1
"Hanah also had a tough day against a solid opponent and lost in straight sets," Wiemers said. "With a 28-15 record, she has had a very successful season and may be awarded a seed at state.
"We will have to await the pairings Monday to see what's ahead for Hanah. Overall, I feel confident she will be able to advance in the tournament and pick up some points for the team."
No. 1 Doubles
Melissa Lyster/
Amy Lester def.
Reiss/Abbott, 6-3, 6-2
"Melissa and Amy picked up their 40th win of the season in straight sets," Wiemers said. "They got off to a slow start, but elevated their play as the match played out.
"They have established a 40-3 record and have put themselves into a great position to be seeded at state.
"There are some excellent doubles teams and it will be interesting to see where the girls end up. No matter what happens, they need to go into state ready to play."
No. 2 Doubles
Cody Korus/Amy Been
def. McCroden/Clough,
7-6 (7-5), 6-2
"After winning a close and exciting first set, the girls dominated the second set to win in straight sets," Wiemers said. "They did a great job of battling in the first set to win in a tie-break.
"With the win they have amassed a 36-7 record and should be in a great position to be seeded. There will not be many other teams with a 42-match total, of which they have won 36 of those matches."
Junior Varsity Matches
Jessica Jankovits/
Renetta Rawlings
def. McQuillan/Dack, 8-0
Jankovits def. McQuillan, 6-2
Rawlings def. Dack, 6-2
"Jessica and Renetta played well and came away with a couple victories each," Wiemers said. "They have been very consistent this season and I have enjoyed watching them develop. Jessica is only a sophomore and will compete for a varsity spot next season.
"She has the ability to play either doubles or singles, which makes it easier for me to slot her into a position where she will help us the most.
"We will lose three doubles players this season, so we will need to address those open spots next year.
"Renetta will graduate this year, but has been a steady player for us this season. She also has the ability to play either singles or doubles and that has been helpful this year.
"She is a super nice girl on and off the court and we wish her the best as she graduates this weekend."
