ATWOOD -- David J. Phelps Jr., 70, died Tuesday (April 29, 2008) at Good Samaritan Center in Kearney.
He was born Dec. 11, 1937, to David Jay and Alta May (Scarrow) Phelps in Beardsley, Kan. He was baptized into the Methodist faith on March 21, 1948, at the United Methodist Church in Atwood.
He graduated from Atwood Community High School in 1956. He then joined the Navy, where he served for four years in Washington State, Alaska, California, Japan and on the aircraft carrier USS Ticonderoga before returning to Atwood.
On Sept. 16, 1961, he married Darlene May Wicke. He worked for Central Kansas Power and Midwest Energy for nearly 35 years before retiring in 1996.
He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and served in various posts in the church and community. He involved with the USD 318 school board for 16 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Alta Phelps; wife, Darlene; and sister, Helen Higgins.
Survivors include his son, Daren of Olathe, Kan.; daughter, Darla and husband, Dan Lundberg of Chapman, Kan.; brothers, Norval and wife, Gloria Phelps and Don and wife, Maxine Phelps, all of Atwood; two grandchildren; and many relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be Saturday, 1:30 p.m., at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Atwood with the Rev. Don White officiating. Interment and graveside services will be in the Atwood Fairview Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Sam Hubbard Post No. 46 of Atwood.
Visitation will be Saturday 9 -11:30 a.m., at Williams Funeral Home in Atwood. The casket will remain closed.
Memorials may be given to Redeemer Lutheran Church in Atwood.
