Raymond A. Smith, died Sunday (March 30, 2008) upon arrival at Community Hospital in McCook, at the age of 85.

He was born Oct. 31, 1922, at Lexington, the son of the late Arthur Wilbur and Blanche Edith (West) Smith. Raymond grew up at Stockton, Kan., where he graduated from Stockton High School in 1940.

He continued his education for three semesters at the University of Kansas before entering the U.S. Army on Jan. 30, 1943, serving with the 84th infantry during World War II. Following his honorable discharge from the service on March 14, 1946, he returned to Kansas State College where he received his Civil Engineering Degree.

On Jan. 7, 1951, Raymond married Donna Deardoff at St. Francis. They came to McCook in 1953, where he was an engineer for 34 years with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, retiring in 1980.

He was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook for more than 50 years, a member of American Society of Engineers and Nebraska Professional Engineers.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Carl J. Smith; and brothers-in-law, Delmont Price and Wyndon Deardoff.

Raymond is survived by his wife, Donna Smith of McCook; three sons, Colin Smith and wife, Linda of Phoenix, Ariz., Rodney Smith and wife, Nancy of Boise, Idaho and Daniel Smith and wife, Nicky of Lincoln; eight grandchildren, Jason, Nichole, Wyatt and wife, Julie, Kady, Kyla, Karissa, Caitlain and Riley Smith; one great-granddaughter, Rheanna Smith; brothers-in-law, Ken Deardoff and wife, Delores and Cleland Tice and wife, Kay; sisters-in-law, Darline Price and Joe Deardoff; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday at Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook, with the Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Thurman officiating. Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be given in his name and friends may sign his register at Herrmann Funeral Home from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
