ELWOOD -- Laura Marie Svoboda, 80, of Elwood died Monday (March 24, 2008) at Tri-County Hospital in Lexington.
She was born Feb. 12, 1928, at Riverton to Everett T. and Mabel (Schmitz) Siel. She attended and graduated from Riverton High School in 1945.
She then attended Kearney State College and graduated with a teaching degree in 1949 and received her Masters in Elementary Education from Arizona State University.
She married Martin J. Svoboda on June 1, 1950, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in York. She taught school for 42 years at Benedict, Alhambra District in Phoenix, Ariz., Tri-County School in DeWitt, Burwell and at Elwood for 20 years. She retired in 1998.
She taught piano lessons and was the organist at St. John's Catholic Church in Smithfield for 20 years. She was also a member of St. John's Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents and grandson, Steven M. Lange.
Survivors include her husband, Martin J. Svoboda of Elwood; sons, Martin J. Svoboda II and wife, Judith of Fayetteville, Ark., Thomas B. Svoboda of McCook, Michael A Svoboda and wife, Cindy of Missoula, Mont., Daniel J. Svoboda and wife, Cindy of Holdrege and Ronald E. Svoboda and wife, Lee Ann of Anaheim, Calif.; daughter, Katherine Lange and husband, Duane of Ord; brother, Jack Siel and wife, Velma of Ord; 20 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral Mass will be Saturday, 10 a.m., at St. John's Catholic Church in Smithfield with the Rev. Thomas J. Lux officiating. Interment will follow at 2:30 p.m., at Riverton Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., at Elwood Funeral Home. Rosary will follow at 7 p.m., at the church.
Memorials may be given to Elwood School Foundation or St. John's Catholic Church.
