HERNDON -- Wynemah M. Cox, passed away Easter Sunday, March 23, 2008) at Decatur County Hospital in Oberlin.
She was born July 23, 1936, in Decatur County to George L. and Martha E. (Schrammel) Wurm. Wynemah grew up on the family farm. She graduated from Herndon High School in 1954, then earned her Registered Nurse (RN) diploma in Kansas City.
On April 18, 1958, Wynemah was united in marriage to Francis "Frank" Cox at St. John's Lutheran Church in Oberlin. Together they raised their four children. For many years they made their home in Denver, Colo. In 1976, they returned to Kansas where they made their home in Herndon.
Wynemah had an outstanding career in nursing, working in various hospitals, including Lutheran Medical Center in Wheat Ridge, Colo., where she worked in the emergency department. While there she completed requirements to become a Critical Care Nurse Practitioner.
Upon returning to Kansas, Frank and Wynemah worked together in Cox's IGA Market in Herndon until Wynemah started the Rawlins County Home Health Agency in Atwood. In 1981, she became the administrator of the Rawlins County Public Health Department and Home Health Agency, a position she held until retiring in 1989.
Wynemah was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Oberlin. She was also active in civic and professional organizations. She was a board member of the High Plains Mental Health Center, Public Education Chairman of the Rawlins County Cancer Society, district board member of the Kansas Association of Home Heath Agencies, Kansas Association of Local Health Departments, Kansas Public Health Association and a member of Republican Committee Women for Herndon Township.
Wynemah was a family oriented person and enjoyed participating in activities for both the Cox and Wurm families. Her hobbies included family genealogy and making scrapbooks.
Survivors include her husband,Frank of Herndon; four children, Dr. James F. and Lucinda Cox of Blackstone, Va., George and Cheryl Cox of Roy Wash., David Cox of Hays, Kan., and Roseann and Mike Domsch of Atwood; three grandchildren, Shakia Rose Domsch, Sohn Michael Domsch and James Alexander William Cox; two brothers, Dale and wife, Lillian Wurm of West Covina, Calif., and George Wurm and wife, Ronda of McCook; and two sisters, Susan McKain and husband, Luke of McDonald, Kan., and Rose Boehm and husband, Scott of McCook.
Her parents and a brother, Lawrence Wurm preceded her in death.
Memorial services will be Thursday, 2 p.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church in Oberlin. Graveside services will be prior to church services on Thursday, 10 a.m., at Kansas Veterans Cemetery in WaKeeney, Kan., with the Rev. Rick Langness officiating.
Visitation is today until 8 p.m., at Pauls Funeral Home in Oberlin.
