IMPERIAL -- Mary Barnes, 93, died Monday (March 24, 2008) at Chase County Hospital.

She was born April 24, 1914, at Canby Precinct in Chase County to John E. and Jane Ellen (Clark) Edwards. She grew up in the Canby Precinct and attended Chase County school until the eighth grade.

She married Charles Wilbe Barnes on April 18, 1931, in Oberlin. They lived on the north divide of Wauneta. She worked on the farm and also at the cafe in Wauneta. After her husband's death in 1958, her son and his family lived with her. In 1968, they moved to Imperial, where she lived until her death. She worked at Imperial Manor Nursing Home for several years before retiring at the age of 71.

She was a past member of the VFW Auxiliary in Imperial.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles in 1958; brothers, Edward William and Isaac Edwards; two sisters, Agnes Bussell and Ellen Thomas; a brother in infancy; and a great-grandson, Davy Barnes.

Survivors include her son, Charles "Keith" and wife, Regina of Imperial; daughter-in-law, Shirley Barnes of Imperial; seven grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Funeral services were today at United Methodist Church in Imperial, with the Rev. Kay Alnor officiating. Interment followed at Riverside Cemetery at Wauneta.

Memorials may be given in her name.
