LINCOLN -- Joseph Paul Reed died Monday, March 24, 2008, at his home in Lincoln. He was 60 years old.

Joseph was born on June 1, 1947, in Muskegon, Mich., to Clare and Virginia (Mosher) Reed. He grew up on a farm near Muskegon. He moved to St. Joseph, Mich., when he was 17 to help his brother with a gas station. It was there he met Shirley Lowe and they were married on March 5, 1966. To this union three children were born.

Joe entered the U.S. Army on Aug. 3, 1966, and served during the Vietnam War. He spent his boot camp in Fort Knox, Ky., and AIT in Colorado Springs, Colo. He was stationed in Okinawa, Japan where he operated forklifts, straight trucks, semi-trucks and cranes. He was honorably discharged on July 26, 1968. He continued serving in the Reserves until 1972.

In February of 1985, Joe came to Lincoln and met Jeannine Malleck. After being together for 11 years, they were married on Feb. 27, 1996, in Las Vegas, Nev. He worked and made his home in Lincoln.

Joe was a member of the American Legion. He loved food and gardening. He was a hunter, fisherman, card player, and gambler. He loved to spend time with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one granddaughter, Kassandra Reed; brothers, Jack and Tom Reed; father and mother-in-law, James and Genevieve Malleck; sister-in-law, Judy Keith; and brothers-in-law, Tom Malleck and Marvin Malleck.

Survivors include his wife, Jeannine Reed of Lincoln; son, Joseph Reed II and wife, Amy of Hartford, Mich.; two daughters, Julie and husband, Mike Modelewski of Watervliet, Mich., and Laura and husband, Earl Joiner of Hartford, Mich.; brother, Kenneth Reed and wife, Judy of Vacaville, Calif.; sisters, Peggy and husband, Lester Reigler, Ginny and husband, Bob Semelbauer and Rosemary Kurtzer, all of Muskegon.; sisters-in-law, Linda Reed of Meskegon , Vonda Parrott of Lincoln and Jane and husband, Dan Bahl of Indianola; brothers-in-law, Philip Malleck and Randy Keith of Indianola, Lonnie Malleck and wife, Jo, of Syracuse, Kan., Dennis Malleck and wife, Marilyn of Ness City, Kan.; sister-in-law, Judy Malleck of Central City; seven grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Funeral services will be Saturday, 10 a.m., at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Burial will be in St. Catherine's Cemetery in Indianola with military honors.
