State offering $500 reward for information on hoop net fishing

Tuesday, March 25, 2008
LINCOLN -- Nebraska Wildlife Crimestoppers is offering a reward of up to $500 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person using a hoop net to catch fish from the Republican River near Orleans.

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission Conservation Officer Rich Routh said it is unlawful for anyone to possess or use a hoop net in Nebraska except licensed commercial fishermen may use them in the Missouri River. "We'd like to know of anyone who has a hoop net in their possession," Routh said.

If you witness or have knowledge of this or any other game law violation, you are encouraged to call the NWC toll-free hotline, 1-800-742-7627. Persons reporting information about a game law violation are not required to give their name or appear in court, but they may be eligible for a cash reward.

Hoop net? Is someone actually out there in the river trying to poach basketballs? Or, do I not know which type (assuming more than one) the article is talking about? Hmmmmm! Just a bit of jocular thought, to lighten my day, and perhaps yours. Shalom in Christ, Arley Steinhour
