Vernon L. Wach died Saturday (March 22, 2008) at Community Hospital in McCook, at the age of 85.
He was born Oct. 22, 1922, on the family farm north of Hamlet, to William and Emilie (Schultz) Wach. He graduated from Hamlet High School in 1940.
On Aug. 27, 1944, Vernon married Granta Christensen at Hayes Center and they had one son, Donald G. Wach. They lived and worked on their farm in Hayes County until retiring in 1984.
Vernon enjoyed being with his wife who he affectionately called "Doll," visiting with friends, woodworking and playing cards.
He and Granta were "snow birds" and for many years spent the winter months in Arizona. When they no longer traveled south they moved to Ogallala for five years before moving to Hayes Center in 1999. Since spring of 2007, they have been residents of Heritage of Wauneta.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Donald G. Wach on May 14, 1967; brother, Harold Wach and wife, Anna Mae; sisters, Coletta and husband, Dick Hahn, Naomi and husband, Leonard Nelson; sister-in-law, Zania Wach; and brother-in-law, Basil "Sam" Hubbard.
Vernon is survived by his wife, Granta of Hayes Center; brother, Ralph Wach of Albany, Ore.; sisters, Helena Hubbard of Hamlet and Dorean Carey and husband, A.H. "Bud" of Clearfield, Utah; and numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. (CST), Thursday at Hamlet Union Church in Hamlet with Loran Wach leading the service. Interment will be in Meadow Lawn Cemetery at Hamlet.
Memorials may be given in his name and friends may call at Herrmann Funeral Home from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m., today and Wednesday.
