Bison boys, girls track teams take on North Platte

NORTH PLATTE -- The McCook High School girls track coach was impressed with times and distances recorded by his tracksters in their first meet of the season, against the North Platte Bulldogs Thursday on the Bulldog track.

The NP-McCook dual gives McCook Coach Steve Clapp and his staff the chance to observe the girls in competition, and, he said, allow his coaching staff the opportunity to better place girls in events that will help the team.

Clapp said, "For our first meet, we had a number of impressive times and distances. We also found several areas that we will need improvements, and hopefully this will happen as the season progresses. "

No team scores were recorded, Clapp said. Duals are scored five points for first place, three points for second and one point for third.

McCook won nine of 17 events.

Bison boys 78, North Platte 63

NORTH PLATTE -- McCook High School Bison boys tracksters defeated North Platte in Thursday's warm sunshine, outscoring the Bulldogs 78-63 in an impressive early-season meet.

"With this being the first meet for most of our boys, we performed very well," said co-head coach Tom Sughroue. "With the weather we had, you could only hope the boys would respond to the conditions -- they did. As a coaching staff, we were very pleased with the marks that were achieved today. "

Sughroue cited the first-place winning performances of Matt Berry in the 100 meter, J. D. Stone in the shot put, Sam Frazier in the discus, Cory Gaston in the triple jump and Andrew Reitz in the pole vault. "There were a lot of great efforts today, along with good performances from those efforts," Sughroue said.

"It was great to get to a meet to see how we're progressing as individuals and as a team," Sughroue said.

"Now we know where we are and what we need to do to get better, so we can continue to improve all season long. "

McCook won 10 of 17 events.

Duals are scored five points for first place, three points for second and one point for third.
