ATWATER, Calif. -- Lt. Col. Thurber L. Hoyt, 83, died Feb. 29, 2008, at his home in Merced County, Calif.
He was born Jan. 2, 1925, in Culbertson to Homer and Nettie Hoyt.
In 1945, he married his wife, Betty. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1943 until 1971, as an Air Force pilot and instructor pilot. He flew in World War II and Vietnam, achieving the rank Lieutenant Colonel before his retirement from active service. After retirement he farmed almonds with his family until the present.
He was active in his church and hosted Bible studies in his home. He was a member in the Businessmen's Fellowship group.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Betty Hoyt; two brothers, Marvin and Edwin Hoyt; and stepson, Roger Giesbrecht.
He is survived by his wife of seven years, Hanna; his children Scott Hoyt and wife, Donna, Kathy Kangiser and husband, Glenn, Deborah Mininger and husband, Nathan and Doug Hoyt; step-children, Janet Torgeson, Sharon Drapeau, Patricia McCulloch; sister, Audrey Oliver; 27 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren.
Services were March 6, 2008, at Atwater Baptist Church. Burial followed at the Winton District Cemetary.
Memorials may be given to Hinds Hospice or Atwater Baptist Church.
