IMPERIAL -- Mello John Langenfeld, 82, died Thursday (March 6, 2008), at Chase County Community Hospital.
He was born April 10, 1925, to William F. and Ludvina (Kohles) Langenfeld. He attended Saint Joseph School in Earling and graduated from Creighton University. He taught school at Neola and Paton, Iowa. He started working for John Deere in 1952.
He married Kathleen Emma Assmann of Dunlap, Iowa on Oct. 17, 1953. They lived in Council Bluffs, Iowa until 1969. In 1969, he purchased interest in Midwest Sales and Service and the family moved to Imperial.
He then purchased the local GM dealership and operated Langenfeld Motors. Upon retirement he continued to work at Wendell's Fertilizer in Lamar.
He was active in the Chamber of Commerce and served as president. He was also active in the rotary and Saint Patrick's Catholic Church. He was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus and served on the Imperial City Council.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William F. and Ludvina (Kohles) Langenfeld; two sisters, Rita Schecinger and Gladys Dolan; son, Mel; granddaughter, Raechel Langenfeld and most of his friends.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen; children, Connie and husband, Jeff Pribbeno of Imperial, Bill of Cool, Calif., Gary of Scottsdale, Ariz., Ruth and husband, Dean Eechaute of Warrenton, Mo.. Mike and wife, Susie of Cool, Calif., and John and wife, Cyndi of Wiggins, Colo.; 16 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Funeral Mass was today at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Imperial with the Rev. Bernard Lorenz officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery in Imperial.
A memorial has been established to the St. Patrick's Parish Hall Building Fund.
