Cable company gets high marks

Tuesday, March 4, 2008
Citizens have contacted McCook City Councilman Jack Rogers about the new cable company in the city and gave it gave glowing reviews.

Councilman Rogers shared the comments before the council unanimously approved on second reading an ordinance that grants a non-exclusive, 10-year contract to Great Plains Cable Television, Inc. to operate a cable television system in McCook

One citizen told Councilman Rogers she was very impressed with Great Plains and viewed it as "the best cable company since they started cable in McCook," he related.

Another told him that she has been contacted twice with her concerns about her service.

Great Plains Cable Television of Blair purchased the cable television system from Charter this fall and has local personnel on hand in McCook. City Manager Kurt Fritsch said the company has been "a good experience" and that the council and the public has had good contact with their staff.

Jason Grigg, district manager, explained why there had been a few glitches in the systems in the recent past. Converting and updating their equipment to their own feed from Charter's caused a few complications, he said, along with the recent collision of a vehicle into a utility pole that also caused some power outages.

"This affected out equipment and we lost some channels," he explained.

In other city business, the council also approved on its second reading an ordinance that adopts an Economic Development plan for the city and the McCook Economic Development Corp., that outlines how the MEDC will use sales tax receipts from the half-cent sales tax, that McCook voters approved in the November 2007 special election. The half-cent tax is set to go into effect in July.

The plan was modified at the Feb. 18 city council meeting, to have the Citizens Advisory Review Committee meet at least every three months instead of six months.

The change was recommended by Councilman Rogers and unanimously approved by the council.

The Citizen Advisory Review committee would consist of five registered voters in the city of McCook, appointed by the mayor, with at least one individual with expertise or experience in business, finance or accounting. The committee would review the functions of the economic development plan and advise the council.
