INDIANOLA -- Frances Eva Allen died Saturday, March 1, 2008, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. She was 84 years old.

Frances was born June 3, 1923, in a sod house north of Indianola to Francis Wilford and Johanna (Schutte) Sughroue. She attended country school her first eight grades and graduated from Indianola High School in 1940.

Frances taught in the rural school district for three years. She was employed by CB&Q Railroad for 15 years. She later worked for Community Hospital and Hillcrest Nursing Home before her retirement.

On April 23, 1946, Frances was united in marriage to Clayton Elmore Green in Arapahoe. To this union one son, John was born. Clayton preceded her in death on Dec. 11, 1959.

She was later married to Joseph S. Allen on Jan. 13, 1968 in McCook. To this union six more children joined Frances' family.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and Altar Society. Other memberships included the McCook BPOE Does, VFW Auxiliary, Town and Country Extension Club, Royal Neighbors of America and Federated Women's Club.

In her free time she loved being in her yard and spending time with her grandchildren.

She had been living in Wedgewood Care Center in Grand Island the past four years to be near her son and family.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Francis and Johanna Sughroue; her husbands, Clayton Green and Joseph Allen; two brothers, Gerald and Charles Sughroue; and one sister, Mary Lyons.

Survivors include her son, John Green and wife, Cheryl of Grand Island; three step-sons, Roger Allen and wife, Loren of Nassau, N.Y., Gary Allen and wife, Cristy of Fort Worth, Texas and John Allen of McCook; three step-daughters, Nancy and husband, Curtis Hicks of Lakewood, Colo., Joanne and husband, Steve Hatch of Fort Collins, Colo., and Kathleen and husband, Henry "Chip" Gallagher of Chevak, Ark.; three brothers, Jim Sughroue and wife, Leah of Indianola, Don Sughroue and wife, Jean of Cambridge, and Tom Sughroue of Culbertson; one sister, Nellie Ryan of Cambridge; 20 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Visitation will be today until 8 p.m. Friends may go online at www.carpenterbreland.com to extend condolences.

Rosary is today at 6 p.m., at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Father Tom McGuire officiating.

Mass of Christian burial will be Tuesday, 1 p.m., at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with Father Gary Brethour officiating. Burial will be in St. Catherine's Cemetery in Indianola.
