OBERLIN -- Virgil C. Cathcart died Tuesday (Feb. 26, 2008) at Decatur County Hospital.
He was born April 4, 1919, to Shirley D. and Bessie M. (Coulter) Cathcart in Decatur County. He attended country school and graduated from Decatur Community High School in 1937. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during World War II.
He married Rowena L. Matheny on May 15, 1958, in Oberlin. He lived on the family farm working as a farmer until moving to Oberlin in 1992.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother and sister,-in-law, Lester and Ruth Cathcart and brother-in-law, Chuck Votapka.
Survivors include his wife, Rowena Cathcart of Oberlin; daughters, Carolyn Hackney of Oberlin and Joyce Rippe and husband, Lynn of Danbury; sisters, Vera Durr and husband, Meril of Hutchinson, Kan., and Joy Votapka of Oberlin; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Friday, 2 p.m., at Pauls Funeral Home in Oberlin with the Rev. Doug Hasty officiating. Interment will be in the Oberlin Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m., and Friday from 8 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
Memorials may be given to Prairie Chapel Methodist Church or Decatur County Hospital.
