CAMBRIDGE -- Virgil Ervin Sines died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008, at Memorial Hospital in Cambridge. He was 88 years old.
Virgil was born on July 30, 1919, at the family farm in Decatur County, to Lester David and Lela M. (VanPelt) Sines.
He entered the U.S. Army on Nov. 22, 1943, and served during World War II as an automotive mechanic and military police. He was honorably discharged on May 5, 1946.
Virgil returned to the McCook community and continued to be a mechanic for E.M. Sliger Motors and later for Lee Janssen Motors until his retirement in 1982.
On April 25, 1947, Virgil was united in marriage to Edith (Dawson) Cochran in Hills City, Kan.. To this union one son, Danny was born.
Virgil attended First Assembly of God. He was a member of the Danbury American Legion McDonald/Ryan Post No. 276. Virgil enjoyed fishing, his cats and especially spending time with his grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Lester and Lela Sines; his wife, Edith Sines; his son, Danny Sines; one brother, Cleith Sines; and one sister, Virginia Harsch.
Survivors include his step-son, Lawrence Cochran of Tucumcari, N.M.; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Sines of McCook; one brother, Gerald Sines and wife, LeeOra of McCook; sister, Carolyn and husband, Gary Leitner of McCook; two grandchildren, Dennis Mizell and wife, Sarath of Angleton, Texas and Christy and husband, Scott Lesher of Grand Island; and three great-grandchildren, Casey Lesher, Andrew and Jessica Mizell; numerous nieces, nephews, and family.
Memorials may be given in his name.
Visitation will be today until 5 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m., at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be Thursday, 10:30 a.m,. at the First Assembly of God Church in McCook with Pastor Eddie Wright officiating. Burial will be in the Sherman Cemetery rural Decatur County.
