Katie Neola (Smith) Nichols the youngest of eight children was born May 5, 1916, to parents, George and Sara (Linscott) Smith in a sod house in Wallace County, Kan.
Katie went home to Jesus on Jan. 21, 2008, at the age of 91.
She attended rural elementary school in Wallace County, Kan. She graduated from high school in Winona, Kan. Katie always treasured her education and had many fond memories of her teachers. She could recall the names of almost every teacher.
She married Merlin Edna Nichols on Oct. 3, 1941, in Colby, Kan. After marriage the couple began farming south of Levant, Kan. In 1946, they moved to a farm between Trenton and Culbertson, where they resided for the past 62 years.
Katie was a wonderful farm wife and mother, she always enjoyed her large family and prepared wonderful meals for them on various holidays.
Katie was an avid gardener and spent most of her spare time in her garden and yard helping God grow beautiful flowers along with many fruits and vegetables.
Katie attended Culbertson United Methodist Church and was active in the United Methodist Women Group.
Katie, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Sara Smith; four brothers, Neil Smith, Mel Smith, Cliff Smith and Floyd Smith; and three sisters, Carrie Whiteford, Georgia Eaton and Marjorie Smith.
She is survived by her husband, Merlin; five children and their spouses, sons, Jay and wife, Shirley of Shawnee, Kan., Jerry and wife, Rhonda of Winona, Kan., Paul and wife, Mary of Culbertson, Dennis and wife, Cathy of Culbertson; daughter, Carolyn and husband, Dana Parker of Rapid City, S.D.; 15 grandchildren, Chad and Charla, Shannon and Shane, Kyle and Nancy, Kevin, Karen and Marcus, Brooke and Chad, Brette, Amy, Bryce and Stephanie, Dathan and Sarena, Jael, Kysha, Kasiah and Shea, Jerray and Shawn; 12 great-grandchildren, Kota, Kyra, Audra, Kalyssa, Nathanial, Joslyn, Grace, Kallan, Nicole, Christopher, Kiley and Taylor; two sisters-in-laws, Eileen Smith and Lee Nichols and brother-in-law, Harry Krueger, all of Kansas; many nieces, nephews and beloved friends.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Culbertson, with the Rev. Richard Melano officiating. Interment will be in the Culbertson Cemetery.
Memorials may be given in her name and friends may call at Herrmann Funeral Chapel in Culbertson from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m.
