CAMBRIDGE -- The Cambridge Trojan girls and Hayes Center boys basketball teams both improved to 11-0 after posting wins Saturday at Cambridge.

The Cambridge girls blasted the Hayes Center girls 70-20 and the Hayes Center boys rolled to a 63-43 win over the Cambridge boys.

The Cambridge girls raced out to a 29-4 lead in the first quarter. It was a total team effort with nine out of 13 girls scoring. The Trojans shot 45 percent from the field and 75 percent from the free throw line hitting nine of 12.

The Trojans were led in scoring by Traci Keyser and Frankie Petersen each with 19 points followed by Bailey Soucie with 7, Whitney Rice, Halee Long and Shelby Schultz each with 6, Kellie Ballou 3 and Danielle Carpenter 2.

Petersen had 5 steals and Cody Long 4. The Trojans had 21 steals total.

The Hayes Center Cardinals (1-11) were led in scoring by Samantha Deaver with 6, Rebecca Gigax and Liz Karre each with 4, Lindsay Ridlen 3, and Amanda Fornoff, Shelby Tyan and Joslyn Large each with 1.

Karre and Deaver each had 5 rebounds. Morgan Pickett and Joslyn Large each had 4. Gigax and McKenzie Messersmith each had 3 steals and Karre 2.

"This was a very tough game for our girls tonight, but I feel they handled it well. In Friday night's game (a win over Brady), the girls played with a ton of emotion and physically drained themselves. So it was tough for the girls to come back and play Cambridge, arguably one of the top three girls teams in western Nebraska."

The Hayes Center boys were paced by Levi Tyan with 16 points. Matt Gohl scored 12 and Justin Huss 11.

Gohl had 9 rebounds, Jake Rowley 7 and Tyler Clifford 4. Huss had 4 assists and Clifford 3. Gohl had 7 steals and Clifford 5.

Troy Hayes led Cambridge with 13 points. Bo Cribelli added 10 and Pake Hilker 8.

"The boys did a nice job tonight, especially after making some minor adjustments in the second half," said Hayes Center boys coach Louis Cuellar. "We were able to get some key defensive stops and convert them on the offensive end of the floor."

Cambridge coach Chris Barr said it was a great game for the Trojans despite the loss.

"We stuck to the game plan that the coaches had come up with and we were only down by four at half," said Trojans' coach Chris Barr. "That was a good sign holding the No. 3-ranked team in the state to 28 points in the first half.

"However, in the second half, Hayes Center started to pressure us more, and we made some costly turnovers that led to them controlling the third quarter.

"We can play with any team, we just have to learn how not to make mistakes in certain points of the game. It was the small things, the mental game that hurt us tonight. But this team is coming along nicely, and we keep improving and that is a true sign of success."
