ORLEANS -- Robertta Lee Banning, 60, died Tuesday (Jan. 8, 2008), at her home in Orleans.
She was born July 6, 1947, to Robert LaVern Hester and Barbara Lee (Mehaffie) Hester in Oxford.
She started school in Oxford and then the family moved to Fort Morgan, Colo., in 1953. They returned to Oxford in April 1962 where she finished high school, graduating in 1965. While in high school, she worked as a nurse's aide at the Oxford Hospital. In the fall of 1965, she attended the Kearney Vocational School of Practical Nursing where she graduated in 1966 and received her licensed practical nursing license. Following her education, she resided in Denver, Colo., where she worked in geriatric nursing.
On Sept. 22, 1968, she married Jerry D. Pfeiffer at St. John's Lutheran Church in Oxford. They resided in Denver until she was severely injured in a car accident in July of 1969, which made it necessary for them to return to Nebraska. They made their home in Orleans until July of 1970, when they moved to Long Island, Kan. They adopted a son, Michael Shawn, in July 1975. He was 13 years old. The couple divorced in 1982. She moved to Alma in 1983 and back to Orleans in 1985.
On May 9, 1986, she married Duane Earl "Pepper" Banning at the home of his mother in Alma. They made their home in Orleans. She was employed at the Beaver City Manor Nursing Home from 1989 until 1990 and was employed at the Walker Post Manor in Oxford from 1991 until 1992 when a back injury forced her to leave the nursing field. She was employed at Bosselman's Pump and Pantry in Alma until she was diagnosed with renal cancer in October 2006.
She was preceded in death by her father on Sept. 28, 1968, and her mother on Nov. 19, 1981.
Survivors include her husband, Pepper Banning of Orleans, her son, Mike Pfeiffer of Burlington, Vt.; a step-daughter, Lorrie Mennenga and husband, Michael of Phoenix, Ariz.; a step-son, David Banning and wife, Mary Catherine of Lincoln; two brothers, Robert Hester and wife, Charlotte of Sterling, and Richard Hester and wife, Jean of McCook; a sister, Mrs. Ronda Jasnoch, and husband, Jim of McCook, Nebraska; one grandchild; and three step-grandchildren.
She was cremated following death. There will be no memorial services, but a celebration of her life is planned in July 2008.
