Rawlins County boys, girls sweep Roughriders

SOUTHWEST -- The Rawlins County-Atwood boys basketball teams improved to 8-0 with a 72-53 win over Southwest High School Tuesday night.

Drew Basgall led all scoring with 25 points. Elijah Kastens added 20 and Jackson Grafel and Marcus Cahoj each scored 10 points.

"Alan Haag got in foul trouble, he's a good post player," said Rawlins County coach Jeff Lankas. "They got after it."

Tony Marquadt led the Roughriders with 12 points. Calvin Vontz scored 10 points.

Rawlins County travels to Goodland Friday. Southwest will go to Bertrand Friday.

HAYES CENTER -- The Hayes Center boys stay unbeaten with a 66-32 victory over Medicine Valley Tuesday night.

Levi Tyan led the Cardinals with 14 points. Jake Rowley scored 12 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Matt Gohl scored 12 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

"The boys played good defense tonight and I applaud their effort that they gave," said coach Louis Cuellar.

"We started off a little sluggish offensively but got going in the second half. I challenged them at half time to step up and make plays and they responded quite well."

Clint Bryant led the Raiders with 9 points.

Hayes Center will host Brady Friday. Medicine Valley will host Dundy County Friday.

HAYES CENTER -- The Medicine Valley girls held the Hayes Center Cardinals to 10 points in the second half to win 45-30 Tuesday.

Aundrea Jorgensen led the Raiders with 12 points, Krysta Thompson put in 10 points.

Rebecca Gigax netted 17 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals for the Cardinals.

"I thought this was our best effort of the year so far," said Hayes Center coach Scott Jorgensen. "We started out very strong in the first half, but the intensity wasn't there in the third quarter. In response, the girls played to their ability in the fourth quarter.

"Defensively, we did many good things, once again. Offensively, we struggled, but we didn't give up. Overall, I was satisfied, but I know the girls are hungry for more."

SOUTHWEST -- The Rawlins County girls held off the Southwest Roughriders to post a 57-53 win Tuesday.

Sara Miller led the Buffs with 23 points. Macy Migchelbrink added 16 points, Laura Wolters 14 points.

"We struggled in the first half with turnovers," said Southwest coach Dennis Troester.

"We gave a great defensive effort in the second half and had opportunities to win the game but just fell short at the end."

Lisa Lord led the Roughriders with 16 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and had 4 steals. Jennifer Daffer put up 14 points and pulled down 5 rebounds.

Rawlins County will travel to Goodland Friday. Southwest will go to Bertrand Friday.

OBERLIN -- The Decatur Community Red Devils held off Hoxie 71-65 Tuesday night.

Oberlin had five players in double figures with Lucas Juenemann leading with 23 points.

Logan Fortin scored 11 points. Toby Peters, Jacob Fortin and Sam Stapp each had 10 points.

Josh Gaede led Hoxie with 16 points.

Oberlin will travel to Quinter Friday.

OBERLIN -- The Hoxie girls scored 37 points in the second half to pick up a victory over Oberlin 68-56 Tuesday night.

Corinna Hoyt and Kendra Spresser each scored 16 points for Hoxie.

Adrienne Pauls led Oberlin with 14 points. Heather Glodt added 13 points.

ARAPAHOE -- Arapahoe slipped past Eustis-Farnam 56-55 Tuesday night.

Adam Snyder led the Aarapahoe Warriors with 21 points. Dillon Breinig and Jordan Spaulding both scored 13 points.

Weston Keller put in 15 points for the Eustis-Farnam Knights.

The Warriors improved their record to 7-5 and will host Elwood Friday.

The Knights improved to 4-4 on the season.

ARAPAHOE -- The Eustis Farnam Knights scored 15 points in overtime to beat Arapahoe 55-47 Tuesday.

Katie Fagot led the Knights with 15 points. Jacy Schultheiss had 13 points, 14 rebounds, 4 assists, 6 steals and 3 blocked shots. Jordan Rieker scored 11 points. Lindsey Ferrell added 10 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists.

"It was a hard-fought win in a tough environment," said Knights coach Brad Dunlap. "We let a couple of big leads get away from us, but a lot of that had to do with Arapahoe's defensive pressure.

"In the overtime we stepped up and played our best basketball of the night. I'm proud of the girls for bouncing back from the Pleasanton loss and beating a good Arapahoe team."

Cheryl Braithwait led the Warriors with 16 points. Brittany Fanning added 11 and Michele Borden 10 points.

Eustis-Farnam improved to 6-2. Arapahoe goes to 8-4 on the season and will host Elwood Friday.
