BEAVER CITY -- Lela Fay Ruby, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2007, at Beaver City Manor in Beaver City, at the age of 85.

She was born March 12, 1922, in a sod house north of Danbury, the daughter of the late Victor and Etta (Winters) Brown. Lela grew up at Danbury, where she graduated from Danbury High School in 1940.

On March 16, 1941, Lela married Gerald Stanley Ruby at Oberlin and they spent their married lives at Danbury. For 19 years they owned and operated a school bus for the Danbury School System. She sold subscriptions for the Indianola Newspaper and for 10 years was a sales representative for Avon Products.

As a seamstress, she made prom dresses that looked like they came from New York. She made and decorated wedding cakes for all her daughters. The last cake she made was for Edna's 25th wedding anniversary.

In 1968, she received her C.N.A. certificate and worked at the Oberlin Hospital and later worked for Home Health Care around Cambridge and Arapahoe.

She was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America.

Following the death of her husband, Gerald on March 9, 1980, she moved to Cambridge in 1988 and resided at Beaver City Manor Home in Beaver City since February 19, 2006.

She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Victoria Ruby on Dec. 18, 1987; her parents; two brothers, Rollo Brown and Warren Brown; one sister, Vera Tuller; and two great-grandchildren.

Lela is survived by two daughters, Geraldine Golbek and husband, Gerald of Norton, Kan., and Edna Brush and husband, Larry of McCook; six grandchildren, Letha Cox, Tammy Brush, Kimberly Holiday and husband, Robbi, Randal Goodenberger, Richard Goodenberger and Rodney Goodenberger; 10 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Lola Brown of Kendall, Kan.; and relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday at Herrmann Memorial Chapel in McCook, with the Rev. Jon Albrecht officiating. Interment will be in the Lebanon Cemetery.

Memorials may be given in her name and friends may call at Herrmann Funeral Home in McCook from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m.
