Trojan girls squad blasts Eagles in Cambridge tourney opener

CAMBRIDGE -- The Cambridge Trojan girls overpowered the Southern Valley Eagles at the Cambridge Holiday Tournament on Monday 54-26.

Cambridge took control of the game with some good rebounding and solid defense after overcoming some early turnovers to Southern Valley.

Leading 19-10 after the first quarter, Cambridge held Southern Valley to just 2 points in the second quarter and led 28-12 at halftime.

The Trojans came out the third quarter and outscored the Eagles 16-4 to lead by 28 at the end of the quarter.

"I was very pleased with our defensive effort in the second and third quarters to put the game away. For the game, we had 31 points off of Southern Valley turnovers," said Cambridge coach Andy Long.

Scorers for Cambridge were Traci Keyser with 18, Shelby Schultz 14, Kellie Ballou 6, Lynae Lytle 6, Bailey Soucie 5, Halee Long 2 and Whitney Rice 1.

Keyser pulled down 9 rebounds while Schultz had 8. The play of the younger players in the fourth quarter was a bonus for the Trojans. At times, Cambridge had four freshmen on the floor going toe to toe with Southern Valley.

"I am very proud of how all 12 girls play as a team and keep the same intensity level throughout the game," Long said.

Hennessey Hogeland led Southern Valley with 6 points. Cassie Brooks added 4.

CAMBRIDGE -- After a slow start in the first quarter in which Southern Valley led 4-0, Southern Valley outscored the Trojans 19-11 in the second quarter and rolled to a 47-32 win in the first round of the Cambridge Holiday Tournament.

Michael Hoxmeier led the Eagles with 14 points. Zach Nielsen scored 10.

Jackson Johnson paced the Cambridge Trojans with 8 points. Troy Hayes scored 6, Bo Cribelli 5 and Pake Hilker 5.

"The defense was great in the first half," said Cambridge boys coach Chris Barr. "We are shutting down teams defensively but right now we are not producing on the offensive end.

"We need to continue to work on our patience on the offensive end and limit our turnovers. We just cannot keep missing open shots and layups. We have to remain focused on our team objectives and continue to get better."

CAMBRIDGE -- The Hitchcock County Falcons improve to 5-2 beating Wauneta-Palisade 48-40 Monday in the Cambridge Holiday Tournament.

Orrin Riggs led the Falcons with 14 points.

"The kids played well tonight and we showed improvement from the last couple of games," said coach Mike Tines. "It will be fun playing for the championship."

Chris Crowell scored 17 points for the Broncos.

Hitchcock County will play Southern Valley in the championship tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Cambridge.

Blair Dixon netted 19 points for the Broncos. Brandi Fanning added 11.

Wauneta-Palisade will take on Cambridge for the championship tonight at 6 p.m. in Cambridge.

SOUTHWEST -- Lisa Lord scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Roughriders over the Raiders Monday night.

"We played well and picked up the intensity in the third quarter," said coach Dennis Troester. "We kept them in the game with fouls in the first half.

Krysta Thompson put in 8 points and 6 rebounds for the Raiders.

Southwest will host Cambridge Jan. 4. Medicine Valley will host Wallace tonight.

Ben Wolfe scored 14 for the Raiders.

Adam Snyder put up 13 points for Arapahoe. Dillion Breinig scored 12 points, snagged 10 rebounds and 5 assists.

Arapahoe will host a Holiday Tournament Dec. 27-28.

teams play well

EUSTIS -- Eustis-Farnam's girls and boys basketball teams beat out Arnold Saturday. The boys also defeated Maywood on Friday.

The Knight boys defeated Arnold 63-39 and Maywood 57-48. The girls defeated Arnold 42-28.

"Any victory we can get at Arnold is a good one," said Knights Coach Brad Dunlap. "They are well coached and played aggressively. Our defense played well and we moved the ball efficiently against Arnold's zone.

We still have work to do on the offensive end, but I have a lot of confidence in this group and I know we'll get the bugs worked out."

Jordan Rieker and Katie Fagot led the Knights in scoring.

Rieker posted 17 points and had 6 rebounds and Fagot had 12 points and 3 assists.

Jacey Schultheiss led the team in rebounds with 10 and had 2 blocked shots. Lindsey Ferrell followed with 7 rebounds and 5 assists and Taryn Pieper had 2 assists and 2 steals.

"Our pressure defense was very effective in getting steals and forcing turnovers," said Knights boys coach Bobby Johnson. "It also limited Arnold to only 27 shot attempts while we attempted 66 shots.

We were also very aggressive on the offensive boards as we collected 16 rebounds for second shots."

Drew Wetovick took the board for the Knights posting 20 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals. Weston Keller put in 11 points,11 steals and 5 assists. Derek Williams had 7 points and Jerud Bazhaf had 6 rebounds.

Wetovick led the boys against Maywood Friday with 21 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists.

Keller followed with 13 points and 6 assists and Josh Transmeier had 9 points and 5 rebounds. Williams also had 5 assists and made 8 points.

sweep Sagebrush titles

BREWSTER, Kan. -- Rawlins County's boys and girls took home the Sagebrush Shootout titles Saturday.

The Buffalo girls edged by Stratton, Colo., 52-48 and the boys won over Brewster 62-46.

Elijah Kastens represented the Buffalo boys in the free throw awards, taking runner-up behind champion Trent Kinen of St. Francis.

Ted Crabtree of St. Francis and Drew Basgall of Rawlins County were named to the all tournament team and Macy Migchelbrink and Sara Miller of Rawlins County along with Sidnee Crabtree of St. Francis were named to the girls team.

Miller and Migchelbrink were the top scorers for Rawlins County's girls against Stratton. Miller posted 18 points and Migchelbrink had 15. Miller made 10 two-point shots and Migchelbrink had 1 two and 1 three-point shot.

St. Francis's girls took fourth after falling to Idalia 43-29 and the boys took fifth winning over Triplains 52-39.

HOXIE -- Rawlins County played Hoxie Friday in basketball action. The Buffalo boys won a close game over the Indians 54-53.

Atwood's girls came up short to Hoxie 66-39.

Drew Basgall led the boys to the win with 20 points and Elijah Kastens had 15.

Joe Ratcliffe put in 18 points for Hoxie's boys and Matt Weis had 11.

Sara Miller totaled 21 points for Atwood girls. Laura Wolters had 6 points and Macy Migchelbrink and Sydney Carlson had 4 each.

Corinna Hoyt posted 15 points for Hoxie and Kendra Spresser had 13. Darra Stithem and Bailey Ochs teamed up with 12 points each and Shaylinn Kans had 10.
