McCook CC women drop Region IX sub-regional opening game

LAMAR, Colo. -- The McCook Community College women's basketball team dropped a 65-52 decision to Otero Junior College Thursday night in the first round of the Region IX South Sub-Regional Tournament.

The tournament is being hosted by Lamar Junior College.

Otero (11-2) jumped out to a 36-19 halftime lead. MCC outscored Otero 33-29 in the second half.

"In the second half we really found our heart and pulled with in four points with about three minutes left in the game, but then we started to foul," said MCC women's coach Benjamin Smith.

Ashley Foe led the MCC Indians with 22 points, followed by Bridgette Riddick with 15 and Shanice Johnson 10.

Ali Brickley grabbed 8 rebounds, followed by Johnson and Riddick with 7 each.

The MCC women (2-7) play Western Nebraska (9-3) at 3 p.m. today and Lamar (2-10) at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

"We look forward to playing Western Nebraska on Friday and end our weekend with Lamar," Smith said.

The MCC women finish up the first semester with a game against Northeastern Junior College at Sterling, Colo., Tuesday.

Tip-off is 7 p.m. central time.

MCC men's update -- The MCC men's team takes on Eastern Wyoming Community College Saturday in a Region IX game at Torrington, Wyo.

MCC finishes up the first semester Dec. 7-8 at the Region IX Shootout at North Platte.

MCC plays the Doane College junior varsity at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 7 and Casper College, Wyo., at 1 p.m. Dec. 8.
