Helen Louise Wolfe died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2007, at Community Hospital in McCook at the age of 90.

She was born July 24, 1917, in Frontier County, the daughter of the late James L. and Emily (Dedman) Bortner. Helen grew up in Frontier County and graduated from Hayes County High School in 1935. She graduated from Chadron Teachers' College and taught school in Hayes and Frontier County.

On June 1, 1939, she married Lester Wolfe at Stockville. They had two children, Gary and Mary. Helen worked at DeGroffs. She had lived in McCook since 1960, and loved her family, gardening (especially roses) and sewing.

She was a member of the First American Baptist Church and held many offices throughout the years. She was also a member of the American Baptist Women and Gideon's Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester on Dec. 23, 1980; her parents; and her step-mother, Myrtle Bortner; a son, Gary on Feb. 21, 1947; a sister, Freida Wolfe and one brother, Marion Bortner.

Survivors include her daughter Mary Ellingson of Omaha; a grandson, Christopher Ellingson and great grandchildren, Christian and Alexia Ellingson, all of Scottsbluff.

Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer's Association.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Wednesday and Thursday until 8 p.m. Family and friends may go online at to leave condolences.

Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m., at Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook with Pastor Jeff Thurman officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
