The McCook St. Patrick boys basketball team began the season against Oberlin Monday.

St. Pats A team won 36-27. The B team came up short by two points to Oberlin 27-25.

Kyle Gaston led St. Pats' A team with 15 points and had 7 two point shots. Luke Mabile followed with 6 points and William Burkert had 5. Mabile also had 3 two-pointers and Alex Broadfoot made 2 free throws.

"We got off to a quick start with four different players scoring in the last quarter," said Knights' coach Rod Gaston. "By halftime all six players who played had scored.

"Our defensive effort was tremendous, giving up only five field goals in the first half. We have only had about eight practices and I think our lack of conditioning started to show in the second half.

"We had some trouble passing and catching and missed some easy shots. As we get in better shape, these problems will work themselves out."

Shane McEvoy and Saegar Grafel shared scoring duties for Oberlin, with 7 points each. McEvoy led in shots with 3 two-pointers and Grafel made 2 free throws.

In the B game, Zach May led Oberlin with 15 points, 6 two point shots and 1 three pointer.

Jonathon Spilinek put in 10 points for St. Pats. Josh Esher followed with 7 points and Gaston had 3.

"We got off to a very balanced start as four of the five starters scored in the first quarter," said Gaston. "It became a back and forth game and I don't think either team led by more than 4 points. It was a great way for this group to learn about playing competitve basketball."
