It's been a slow news day

Thursday, November 8, 2007
Unless you've been living in a cave for the last week, you have probably heard mention of the writers' strike.

Some people might consider it the end of the world, my husband being one of them. I, however, hope it continues for at least the next three years.

Brad hates reality shows, and he doesn't like watching a lot of re-runs. If I'm lucky that might mean we can have a real conversation without being interrupted by Jaime Somers on Bionic Woman or Hiro on Heroes.

Charlie, on Three-And-A-Half Men, won't be interrupting our supper on Tuesday nights. And speaking of supper, I won't have to watch CSI's autopsies while I'm eating.

I won't be yelling across the five feet that separates us while we sit watching Shark because the television won't be on and there won't be any commercials. For the first time in years, I'll be able to use my normal speaking throughout the entire evening.

The best thing about the whole thing is that the news channels will continue with their programming, repeating the same news every 10 minutes and throwing in an occasional tidbit of news amongst all the fluff and brainless surveys.

The way I see it, it's all good.

For some reason our television remains on all day, usually on one of the 24-hour news channels. Wednesday, I watched a brief clip on a survey the channel was doing, I caught the ongoing results in between putting together a bid proposal on a book, washing dishes, learning about a couple who had a cow fall on their car, running pictures to Selden, Kan., and watching Jay Leno pass out doughnuts to the strikers.

The question: "Which presidential candidate would be the best/worst babysitter?" (It must have been a slow news day.) Last I heard, Hillary was toward the top of the list as both best and worst. Barack Obama topped the list as the best.

I'm thinking Hillary lost the vote because of her current association with Bill Clinton -- I mean who would want to come home and find her making out with her boy toy.

Barack, on the other hand, might have come in at the top because the man can dance. I saw him doing it on some daytime talk show via the same news channel -- again a slow news day.

I didn't pay that much attention to how the Republican candidates fared -- I'm assuming most of them fell toward the bottom of the list right along with Hilary. Republicans are just too uptight to make good babysitters -- I've never seen one of them dance like Barack dances.

I guess the survey may actually be relevant since there will be one candidate that will be "babysitting" an estimated 303.5 million Americans in just over a year.

Hopefully we don't have to make our choice based on how well a candidate dances or who we'll find in our house with the babysitter when we get home from an evening out on the town.

The best news I saw all day was that the couple that was in the car when the cow fell on it came away from the incident unharmed.
