Squad falls to GICC

in district title match

HOLDREGE -- The Cambridge Trojans lost to Grand Island Central Catholic at the C2-5 district finals 25-13, 25-23, 24-26, 25-19 Friday night at Holdrege and earned a wild card berth at the state tournament.

Shelby Schultz led the Trojans with 21 kills, 11 digs, 1 assist, 7 blocks and 2 points. Traci Keyser had 13 kills, 14 digs, 1 ace serve, 2 blocks and 5 points.

Frankie Petersen had 40 set assists, 1 kill, 15 digs, 3 ace serves, 3 blocks and 7 points. Lynae Lytle had 6 kills, 11 digs, 1 ace serve, 2 blocks and 6 points.

Whitney Rice had 7 digs, 2 assists, 1 ace serve, 1 block and 1 point. Kellie Ballou had 8 kills, 2 digs and 3 blocks. Cody Long had 16 digs and 7 points.

"GICC was by far the best team we have played all year. The girls came out in the first game and were a little overwhelmed by GICC's powerful offense," said Cambridge coach Judy Mousel, whose team will take a 24-3 record to the state tournament.

"We weren't getting our blocks up or our passes to the setter and therefore couldn't get anything to go our way. In game two we played right with them, but didn't allow ourselves to keep the momentum because we missed too many serves.

"We played much better defense in games three and four and managed to win game three. This game was definitely a learning experience for us and will only help us compete stronger in Lincoln. Hopefully, we will have a second chance at them."

In the first round of the Class C-2 state volleyball tournament, the Trojans play No. 6 seed Perkins County at 1 p.m. Friday at the Waverly High School gymnasium.

The semifinals are slated for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Waverly.

The championship match is at 8 p.m. Saturday at Pershing Auditorium in Lincoln.
