GRAND ISLAND " Anthony “Tony” Calvo, 79, died Tuesday (Oct. 16, 2007), at St. Francis Medical Center after battling cancer.

He was born Aug. 5, 1928, in Newark, N.J.

He joined the Merchant Marines at age 17, becoming the youngest chief cook during his term of service. He later joined the Air Force and then the Navy.

On Oct. 29, 1964, he married Patty Perkins in Denver, Colo. The couple lived there and in California, Boston and New Jersey before moving to McCook where they lived for 15 years, owning and operating “Tony & Patty’s Speakeasy,” and later, a cab company. They moved to Grand Island in 1985. He retired from Prince of the Road in 2006 due to ill health.

He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter and three brothers-in-law.

Survivors include his wife, Patty of Grand Island; a son, Joey of New Jersey; and a step-daughter, Kim and husband, Rick Zerr of Ocean Shores, Wash.; several sisters and brothers-in-law; and a step-granddaughter.

Services will be 2 p.m., Friday at Kleine Funeral Home in Grand Island. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visition is today until 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
