Movie Review - The Seeker: The Dark is Rising

Rated PG and starring Alexander Ludwig and Christopher Eccleston.

Running Time: 1 hr. 39 mins.

The Seeker is a kids movie. There is not much here for the adult crowd. Other than that, The Seeker is a well made film that should appeal to a wide majority of young ones who have embraced some of the other fantasy movies that have come out. From the very opening, the movie expects you to just accept certain things that are otherwise unbelievable. This works for the most part as the movie is briskly paced to keep the action moving.

Our story starts out with Will. Will is the chosen one, or the seeker. He is the only one who can see the signs to grab certain hidden elements. With each one found, Will becomes stronger and has increased superpowers. At the same time, the Dark is getting stronger and trying to destroy the Earth. The only way to save the world, is for Will to find all of these hidden elements.

It is amazing to me what filmmakers prioritize sometimes. Will is given some really cool superpowers but the only time he uses them are to throw a tantrum. When faced with danger, Will turns limp and barely does anything. He has a group of 4 people who are there to help protect him, but they don't seem to be too awfully worried if Will goes off and does whatever he wants. The movie continually contradicts itself in that way.

Overall, the show is good enough for a watch, however, most people won't be going back for a second viewing. Take the kids, they'll love it, but stick around, as some parts are a bit frightening for little ones.

This show is playing at Cinema 3 in McCook. Check out www.fridleytheatres.com for more showtimes and information.
