Most of the time I forget what day it is. But there are also other reasons … I oversleep; I tell myself, "I'll write it in the morning," and by the time morning comes, I've forgotten it; I get involved in other projects; I get done with my early morning job and decide to go back to bed … and the list goes on and on.
Then there's the fact that you have to come up with a new idea every week. People can only stand so much of listening to stories about my husband, my kids and my dogs.
Speaking of my kids, about two weeks ago, I got a letter from my youngest telling me he couldn't stand the idea of being away from home and he planned to do everything he could to get out of the National Guard training he was facing. He was homesick and bored. He'd been held in reception for two weeks and was ready to get the show on the road.
Within an hour of opening his letter, I got a call from my oldest son, who's been in the Coast Guard for 71?2 years. They had given him two months to lose 20 pounds and he wasn't sure he was going to even try. He was considering taking an early discharge and moving home to finish his online schooling.
Then I got depressed.
As Brad and I sat at our favorite watering hole that night, I looked at him, tears starting to well in my eyes, and said, "We're going to have to build a bigger house."
He laughed at me.
Don't get me wrong. I would love to have my kids back for a visit -- and I suppose if they really did run into a problem, they would both be welcome back into the fold. I'm just not sure that four people in our small two bedroom home would be feasible. There are times when it's not even big enough for Brad and I.
Add four dogs and two adult kids with all their belongings and life could get pretty hectic.
We do have a small camper we could hook up to the house, and my parents have one we could most likely borrow for a couple of weeks -- or years -- if necessary, but it would still make for tight quarters.
But in the end, they would both be welcomed with open arms. I mean who could resist the pleasure of having someone to do the dishes, the cooking, the yard work and the errands I've had to do ever since Jeremy left for Basic.
A former co-worker of mine once told me she always had a couple of columns written in advance so when she experienced writer's block, all she had to do was to go to her "Haven't used these, yet" files and pull one up. One of these days, I'll do you all a favor and start one of my own.
In the meantime, I guess you'll just have to put up with stories about my husband, my kids and my dogs. Sorry.
