Hayes Center falls in home matches

HAYES CENTER -- Hayes Center's volleyball team hosted its first triangular of the season Tuesday with Dundy County and Wallace.

The Cardinals fell to Wallace 25-14, 25-13 and to Dundy County 25-19, 25-19.

Rebecca Gigax had 3 aces against Wallace and had 6 blocks with 1 ace block and 3 kills.

McKenzie Messersmith had 1 ace and was 7-7 in serving and had 5 assists.

Sammy Deaver had 7 blocks and 2 kills and Liz Karre had 5 digs and 1 kill. Josie Rosno had 4 digs and Katie Schwenk had 1 assist.

"We were not mentally ready to play," said Cardinals' coach Lindsey Jorgensen. "We did learn that to be competitive an athlete has to prepare physical, mentally and emotionally."

Messersmith and Schwenk teamed up with 8 assists each against Dundy County. Rosno went 7 for 7 in serving and had 4 kills.

Gigax led in kills with 7 and Morgan Pickett had 6 digs. Heather Musgrave had 1 ace and 1 ace block and Deaver had 2 kills and 3 blocks.

"Our attackers really played aggressive tonight," said Coach Jorgensen. "I had challenged my seniors and they really stepped up."

Rawlins County sweeps St. Francis, Sharon Springs -- The Rawlins County-Atwood volleyball team went 2-0 at the Sharon Springs Triangular Tuesday.

The Buffaloes defeated Sharon Springs 25-20, 25-17 and St. Francis 25-18, 25-17.

St. Francis lost to Sharon Springs 25-17, 25-22.

Rawlins County hosts Colby and Norton next Tuesday and plays at Oberlin Sept. 29.

St. Francis plays at Benkelman Thursday against Dundy County and Chase County.

Southwest downs Wauneta-Palisade -- Southwest performed well against Wauneta-Palisade in volleyball Tuesday.

"We played well last night," said Southwest Coach Dennis Troester. "It was our best performance of the season. Everyone contributed."

The Roughriders defeated the Broncos 25-6, 25-10, 25-13.

Morgan Potthoff was the leading scorer for Southwest with 18 points and 1 ace serve.

Potthoff also led in assist with 31 and had 4 blocks and 2 digs. Kelsey Coolidge added in 10 points and had 9 digs and 1 ace.

Megan Conway and Lisa Lord both had 8 points. Lord had 3 aces, 9 blocks and 17 kills. Ashley Weaver had 9 kills and Abby Houghtelling had 3 aces.

Southwest scoring -- M. Potthoff 18, M. Conway 8, L. Lord 8, A. Weaver 4, A. Houghtelling 6, K. Coolidge 10.

Med Valley splits with Arnold, Brady -- Medicine Valley went 1-1 Tuesday against Arnold and Brady. The Raiders won over Brady 25-22, 25-18, but fell short to Arnold 25-14, 25-17.

"The girls played a strong all around game," said Raiders' coach Staci Gilmore. "We switched up our line-up the day before and all the girls really stepped it up."

Whitney Schroeder, Kallie Welch and Jordan Zysset led in serving against Brady.

Schroeder had 1 ace, 11 points and 6 assists and Zysset had 1 ace, 9 points and 9 digs.

Welch went 10-10 in serving, had 2 aces, 5 kills, 2 blocks and 11 points. Eva Liakos had 2 kills and blocks and Krysta Thompson had 9 digs.

Liakos and Welch both had 7 points against Arnold. Welch had 1 ace and 4 kills and Liakos had 11 digs. Schroeder had 8 assists and Erica Madron had 9 digs.

Eustis-Farnam edges Bertrand -- Eustis-Farnam edged by Bertrand 25-20, 25-20, 25-19 Tuesday.

Jacey Schultheiss led the Knights in attacks with 29 and had 9 kills, 3 aces and 8 digs.

Jordan Rieker had 11 digs and 6 kills. Lindsey Ferrell had 7 digs and Kenzie Banzhaf had 17 assists.

Arapahoe spikers split matches -- Arapahoe's volleyball team went up against Alma and Cozad Tuesday at Alma.

The Warriors scraped by Cozad 25-22, 26-24, but fell shy to Alma 25-15, 27-25.

Cheryl Braithwait had 10 assist in both games and had 9 total kills.

Morgan Breinig led in kills with 12 total and Brittany Fanning had 40 digs. Fanning also had 4 ace serves.

Michelle Borden had 16 assists and 8 kills and Makayla Wendland had 3 ace blocks.

Southern Valley takes match from Franklin -- Southern Valley fought off Franklin in volleyball play Tuesday at the Southern Valley gym.

The Eagles won 25-15, 23-25, 25-22, 25-23 over Franklin.

"The girls really pulled together tonight," said Eagles' coach Suzanne Graves. "We improved our blocking and the hitting was more consistent. It was great to get this win tonight."

Jessica Murdoch and Hennessey Hogeland teamed up to score 13 points each. Cassie Brooks put in 10 points and Abby Schoen and Jesse Sadd both had 8.

Hogeland also led in kills with 8 and had 6 digs, and 2 aces. Jessica Murdoch had 4 aces and Cassie Brooks had 3.

Murdoch also had 7 digs and 5 blocks. Justina Snider had 8 digs and Christina Bohl led in blocking with 5.

Southern Valley scoring -- H. Hogeland 13, J. Snider 3, C. Brooks 10, A. Schoen 8, J. Sadd 8, J. Murdoch 13.

Maywood and Hitchcock County hit the court Tuesday at Maywood, with the visiting Falcons winning over the Tigers in three sets 25-20, 25-18, 25-13.

Staci Koester led Maywood in scoring with 6 points and 2 aces. Staci went 13-13 in serving, had 5 kills and 16 digs.

Kadee Arensdorf had 1 ace, 10 assists and 9 digs. Brooke Koester led also had 10 assists and Susan Koester had 8 kills and 15 digs.
