BIRD?CITY?-- Velta Katherine Johnson, 100, died Sunday (Aug. 26, 2007) at Hester Memorial Home in Benkelman.

She was born Sept. 20, 1906, in Sherman County.

She married Harold T. Johnson and worked as a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband Harold in 1975 and three grandchildren, Christine Johnson in 1955, Rick Johnson in 1992 and Betty Mansfield in 2005.

Survivors include her sons, Harold 'Mux' Johnson of Bird City and Merle Johnson of Goodland, Kan.; daughters, Dorothy Chipperfield of Benkelman and Deloris Spiker of Goodland; brother, Dale Lighthill of Oak Harbor, Calif.; sisters, Mildred Ward of Morita, Calif., and Eva Murray of St. Francis; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Thursday, 10 a.m., at St. John Lutheran Church in Bird City. Burial will be in the Benkelman Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday 1-9 p.m., at Knodel Funeral Home.

Memorials may be given to Hester Memorial Home of Benkelman.
