McCook pro rodeo standout Garrett Nokes claimed All-Around Cowboy honors at the McCook Rodeo July 27-28 for placing in the top five in three events.

Nokes followed up with two second-place efforts at the 55th Annual Sikeston (Mo.) Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo Saturday night.

At McCook, Nokes tied for first with Michael Otero, Foley, Ala., in the calf roping competition with a time of 8.9 seconds. He placed fourth in the steer wrestling with a time of 4.7 seconds and teamed up with Jamie Wildeman to place fifth in team roping with a time of 9.4 seconds.

Nokes earned $911.71 for his effort in calf roping, $536.93 in steer wrestling and $243.65 in team roping.

All-Around Cowgirl honors went to Hayley Schaffer. She was third in the breakaway roping competition with a time of 3.3 seconds and won $560.80.

Oberlin native Jamie Elwood placed second in breakaway roping with a time of 2.6 seconds. She won $708.38.

Morgan Lindsay won the event in 2.2 seconds and won $855.86.

In the barrel racing, Champion native Deb Cox finished fourth with a time of 17.9 seconds and won $365.85.

At the Sikeston Rodeo, only three of the five riders scheduled for the steer wrestling event showed up.

Taking first place with a commanding time of 3.7 seconds was Brad Morgan, of Brandon, Miss.

Nokes took second place with a time of 15.2, after being penalized with an extra 10 seconds.

Brian Garr, who was the only other rider in the event, did not qualify.

Tie-down roping brought a little hope to the local crowd when Sikeston resident Chad Tibbs rode into the arena.

Tibbs scored high enough to reel in third place, but couldn't pull off a higher score than Otero, who placed first in the event with a 9.8 seconds.

Second place went to Nokes, who lost a heart-breaker to Otero by scoring a 9.9, falling 0.01 seconds shy of the first place mark.
