Helen Irene Schlegel

Feb. 14, 1908-Aug. 1, 2007

Helen Irene Schlegel, 99, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2007, at Hillcrest Nursing Home.

She was born Feb. 14, 1908, in Red Willow County to Charles W. and Minnie E. (Hubler) Nelson. She grew up on a farm northwest of McCook and attended high school in McCook.

On Jan. 6, 1926, she married Willard Clinton Schlegel at her family home. To this union two children were born, Gernadine and Darold. They farmed in the Zion Hill Community northwest of McCook until their retirement in 1974 when they moved into McCook. She lived in their home until 2002 when she moved to Highland Park.

She was a member of the Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook, Federated Women's Club, Federated Garden Club, Town and Country Extension Club and the Hospital Auxiliary. She quilted, crocheted and was an avid card and game player spending many enjoyable hours playing with family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Willard in 1985; son, Darold in 2003; grandson, Doug in 2007; brothers, Donald; Glen and wife, Mildred; Guy and wife, Rosa; sisters, Carrie and husband, Lester Drake; Fay and husband, John Fitzgibbons and Arlene, and husband, Francis Yost.

Survivors include daughter, Gernadine and husband, Gene Bortner of McCook; daughter-in-law, Marjorie Schlegel of Culbertson; three sisters-in-law Lucille Schlegel of Culbertson, Wilma Schilz of Brule and Charlene Schlegel of Pueblo, Colo.; one brother-in-law, Gene Schlegel of Vancouver, Wash.; five grandsons, Bill and wife, Carrol Bortner; Bob and wife, Barbara Bortner; Ben and wife, Ginny Bortner, all of McCook; Tim and wife, Kathy Schlegel of Centerton, Ark.; and Mike and wife, Carol Schlegel of Culbertson; granddaughter, Kristi Schlegel of Aiken, S.C.; 16 great grandchildren, 30 great-great grandchildren and cherished friends Lucy and David Lines and family.

Funeral services will be Monday, 10:30 a.m., at Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Melano officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Friends may call at Herrmann Funeral Home from 9 a.m.-9 p.m., and Sunday from 1-6 p.m.
