Melvin L. "Sparky" Meguire died Thursday, July 19, 2007 at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital in Cambridge, Neb., at the age of 73. He was born Aug. 22, 1933, at Bird City, Kan., the son of the late Lorraine and Ella (Lowe) Meguire. He grew up at Bird City where he graduated from Bird City High School in 1951.

On Dec. 16, 1953, Melvin entered the United States Navy where he was a radar operator. Following his Honorable Discharge from the military on Sept. 8, 1955, he returned to McCook, Neb., where he married Patricia Dike on Sept. 8, 1956. He began working for the McCook R.EA and went for further education at the Lineman School at Norfolk, Neb. He began working for the McCook R.E.A before becoming City Superintendent at Bartley where he served for 42 years retiring in 2000. He was a member of the Bartley Masonic Lodge No. 228 AF & AM. where he was Master in 1994, 1998 and 2006. He was a member of all York Rite Bodies in McCook and was Past Commander of St. John's Commandery in 2005. He was a member of Tehama Temple, Mystic Nobles of the Shrine at Hastings, Nebraska. He was preceded in death by his wife Patricia Meguire on Jan. 2, 2001, one granddaughter, Larrissa Rife, one brother, Robert Meguire and two sisters, Mick Dowdy and Lois Muellar.

Melvin is survived by two daughters, Melba Rife and husband Don of Stratton, Neb., Cindy Hays and husband Greg of McCook, Neb., and one son, Tim Meguire and wife Juli of Seward, Neb. Nine grandchildren; Jarrod Leggott, Thomas Rife, Brooke Rife, Justin McKenna and wife Dusty, Cami Koetter and husband Dustin, Michelle McKenna, Logan Meguire, Kaitlyn Dewey and husband Seth, Elyska Meguire. Two great grandchildren, Hunter Koetter and Trystin McKenna, three step grandchildren, Ahren Hays, Neil Hays and Dylan Hays, special friend Wanda White of Cambridge, Neb., many relatives and friends

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 24, 2007, at the Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook with Rev. Dr. Jeffery Thurman officiating, Interment with Military Honors will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in McCook.

Memorials may be given in his name and friends may call at Herrmann Funeral Home in McCook from 9 a.m.-9 p.m., and Sunday from 1-6 p.m.
