No. 6 seed Red Sox claim Cubs Tournament title

The McCook Midget Baseball Association, Inc. Cubs Division Wal-Mart Championship Tournament was played last Thursday through Sunday at Felling Field.

Wal-Mart sponsored the tournament with trophies and medals. For the third time in three years an elimination team has won the tournament playing with one loss in the double-elimination format.

Lifetime Eyecare Red Sox fought back out of the elimination bracket to capture the championship against the Wells Fargo Braves. The following recap is of the entire tournament.

Game 1: Seligman Dentistry 7 vs. Union Bank & Trust Royals 6

A slow start for the Union Bank & Trust (UB&T) Royals in the 1st inning set the stage for a close game in the later innings.

Seligman Dentistry Angels were held to only 5 appearances at the plate in the 1st inning with Christian Hoffman singling for the Angels.

The Angels held the Royals to a 4 up, 3 down inning only have their side retired in the 2nd.

A 2 run 3rd inning by the Angels was bettered by a run as the Royals put up 3 in the 3rd. The Angels put up 5 runs in the 4th to take the lead for the remainder of the game.

Jake Schlager put up two doubles in the losing effort for the Royals. Cade Hiatt hit a double for the Angels while Christian Hoffman hit 3 singles.

Game 2: That Floor Store

White Sox 12,

Century 21 Cubs 2

A slow start by Century 21 Cubs and a fast start by That Floor Store White Sox put the Cubs behind by nine runs after the 1st inning of play.

Pitching and defense settled in for both teams as the White Sox were then held to three total runs after the 1st.

Austin Lambing scored for the Cubs in the third and Marcus Gonzales crossed the plate in the fourth only to have the White Sox put up 2 more runs to close with the win.

Austin Cherry doubled for the White Sox while Cody Jankovits went 2 for 2 for the Sox.

Game 3: Lifetime Eyecare

Red Sox 6, Parker Reds 4

The Parker Reds started slow with 3 up, 3 down in the 1st and 4 up, 3 down in the 2nd.

The Red Sox capitalized by putting up 3 runs in the first with their six of their first seven hitters getting singles. The Red Sox added one in the second off of Cody Wudtke's double.

The Reds held the Red Sox scoreless in the 4th and 5th but failed to advance runners in the 5th sending the Red Sox into the winners' bracket of the tournament.

Singles were provided by Vince Lyons, Cash Bortner, Chase Midkiff, and Dalton Koetter. The Red Sox saw Keegan Williams go 3 for 3 and Cameron Burkey go 2 for 3 while Kalan Stamm, Dylan McConnville, Robin Suda, Conner Stamm, Colton Lashley, and Chance Koetter all added hits during the game.

Game 4: McCook Clinic Yankees 7 vs. Seligman Dentistry Angels 4

A slow start for the Angels left them having to press late in the game to be in the game.

The Yankees retired the side to start the game and scored 3 runs in the first with two outs on the board to take the lead at the end of the 1st inning 3-0.

The Yankees again retired the side in the second while putting up 2 runs to lead 5-0 at the end of the 2nd.

The Angels launched a late run in the 4th and 5th scoring 1 and 3 respectively but just falling short in the 5th. Doubles and singles by both Trevor Van Pelt and Lucas Post led the Yankees in hitting with another single added by Logan Kircher in the 4th.

'Doubles by Christian Hoffman and Cade Hiatt led the Angels while Andrew Aguilar hit 2 singles and Brandon Clark and Keaton Garcia added one each.

Game 5: Wells Fargo Braves 13, McCook National Bank Astros 8

A scoreless 1st inning for the Astros gave the Braves a 4 run lead at the end of one. The Braves put another 4 run inning together in the to the Astros' 2 runs to lead 8 to 2 at the end of 2.

The Astros rallied in the 3rd putting up 6 runs while the Braves added 1 to push it to an 9-8 lead at the end of 4.

A 4 run 5th inning put the game out of reach leaving the game at 13-8. Mitch Collicott homered and hit 2 singles with Matt Collicott hitting a triple while Jon Spilinek hit 2 doubles for the Braves. Clayton Korus and Spenser Powell doubled for the Astros with Blake Brown going 2 for 3.

Game 6: Parker Reds 5,

Union Bank & Trust Royals 4

The Royals jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the 1st while the Reds clawed back with another 2 runs in the 2nd to help close the gap.

Both defenses held the other scoreless in the 3rd. Parker put up another 2 runs in the 5 to take a 5-4 win.

Singles by Brock Scot, Justin Miller, and Luke Lichty helped the Royals. A double and single by Cashous Bortner helped get the Reds back into the game while Gavin Klie hit a double in a winning effort for the Reds.

Game 7: McCook Clinic Yankees 7,

That Floor Store White Sox 6

The White Sox saw three innings of 4 up 3 down while the Yankees scored 2 in the 1st and 1 in the 2nd to lead 3-0 at the end of three innings of play.

A home run by Tristan Thomas and doubles by Austin Cherry and Cody Jankovits help put 4 on the board for the Sox in the 4th inning. Colton Sis scored the tying run in the 5th.

A double by Thomas scored Allen Zuck in the 6th for the Sox's half of the international tie-breaker inning while the Yankees saw Sean Backer double and stole home to tie the game. Lucas Post singled and scored on an errant pick-off attempt giving the Yankees the win.

Game 8: Wells Fargo Braves 4,

Lifetime Eyecare Red Sox 3

The Red Sox took an early lead in the 1st inning 2-1 on singles by Keegan Williams, McConnville, and a double by Burkey.

In the 2nd the Braves went 3 up, 3 down while the Red Sox added another run scored by Chance Koetter. The 3rd saw the Red Sox and the Braves have their side retired in a scoreless inning.

At the end of 5 the game was tied and another game went to the international tie-breaker inning. Jacob Fritsche scored for the Braves in the bottom half of the tie-breaker to give the Braves the win. Doubles by Kasey Taylor and Kody Rathe led the hitting for the Braves.

Game 9: McCook National

Bank Astros 7,

Parker Reds 5

The Reds took a 3 run lead in the top half of the inning only to see McCook National Bank 2 runs in their half.

The 2nd inning saw the Reds held scoreless while the Astros put up another 2 runs. The 3rd saw both teams put up one run and the 4th saw 2 for the Astros to get the win in this 7-5 game.

Cashous Bortner went 3 for 3 while Wudtke and Bryce Lyons went 2 for 3. Koetter, Klie, Vince Lyons, Chase Midkiff, and Jesse Detty all went 1 for 3.

Blake Brown homered and doubled for the winning team while Levi Baughman and Kolton Stone both went 2 for 3. Tanner Weatherly and Tyler Cuellar singled as well.

Game 10: Seligman Dentistry Angels 7 vs. Century 21 Cubs 6

The Angels saw a 3 hit 1st inning score one run to while the Cubs matched exactly the same. The 2nd saw the Cubs turn 2 hits and 2 walks into one run.

The Angels again matched the Cubs exactly with 2 hits and 2 walks but pushed the base paths to score 2 runs and lead 3-2 at the end of 2 innings.

The Cubs bettered the Angels in the third 3-2 to lead by 2 in the 3rd.

The Angels retired the side of the Cubs in the 4th while the Cubs also held the Angels scoreless in the 4th. In the 5th the Angels put up 3 runs on 2 hits and 4 walks to take the lead in the top half of the inning.

The Cubs attempted to tie it up in the 5th with a hit and a couple of stolen bases only to fall short in this 7-6 match-up.

The Cubs saw Brandon Kofler go 2 for 2, Dalton Goodenberger go 3 for 3, and T.J. Monzon, Mitchell Rietz, and Marcus Gonzales all go 1 for 3.

The Angels saw Zayne Gillen go 2 for 3 and Andrew Conway go 2 for 2. Singles were added by Devin Sughroue, Christian Hoffman, Andrew Aguilar, Dylan Samway, and Brandon Clark.

Game 11: McCook National Bank Astros 11,

That Floor Store

White Sox 6

The 1st inning saw both teams held scoreless while the 2nd saw the Astros put up 5 runs on 7 hits while the Sox put 2 runs on 2 hits.

The 3rd saw the Astros add 3 more runs while Austin Blume's solo home run accounted for their run in the 3rd.

The 4th the Astros put up 3 more runs on 3 hits and two walks. The Sox put up 3 runs on 4 hits. A scoreless 5th for both teams left the score at 11-6.

Brown went 3 for 3 while Drew Bredvick, Levi Baughman, and Kolton Stone all added a double and a single to the Astros hit total. Singles by Tanner Weatherly, Cuellar, and Powell helped in the winning effort.

Blume, Austin Cherry, and Brandon Lucas all had 2 hits while Jankovits, Thomas, and William Flannagan also singled for the Sox.

Game 12: Lifetime Eyecare Red Sox 6, Seligman Dentistry Angels 3

Christian Hoffman scored for the Angels in the 1st on a single by Gillen. Keegan Williams tied the game immediately in the bottom half of the inning with a lead-off home run for the Red Sox. Kalan Stamm scored as well. The 2nd inning saw both teams go 3 up 3 down.

The 3rd saw the Angels' Devin Sughroue and Gillen both double to push the Angels to 3 runs. The Sox saw McConnville homer in the 3rd and help put up 4 runs to push the lead to 6-3.

The 4th and 5th inning the Angels were held scoreless to give the Sox the win.   A lead-off home run by Keegan Williams started this game with offense for the Red set the tone for a game that saw another home run in the 3rd by McConnville.

Burkey went 2 for 2 with Williams while Kalan Stamm and Suda each added hits to help the team.

Championship Bracket - Game 13: Wells Fargo Braves 8,

McCook Clinic Yankees 2

This match up paired the number 1 seeded Yankees against the 2 seeded Braves. Good pitching and strong defense left the game at 1-0 after two innings.

The 3rd inning saw the Braves put up six runs to the Yankees 2. The Braves put up another 4 runs in the 4th on 3 hits.

The 4th saw the Yankees retired in 5 batters and the 5th was in 3.

Sean Backer and Lucas Post went 2 for 3 while Logan Kircher, Van Pelt, Sis, and Delton Ulmer added hits for the Yankees.

Spilinek and Rathe went 2 for 3 with Matt Collicott, Mitch Collicott, Trevor Gleason, and Zack Strecker adding hits as well.

Game 14: Lifetime Eyecare Red Sox 5, McCook National Bank Astros 3

The Astros went 4 up 3 down to start the game while the Sox put up 4 runs in the 1st on 4 hits.

The Astros put up a run in the 2nd. The Astros put up 1 run in the 3rd and 2 runs in the 4th while the Sox put 1 run up in the 4th.

The Astros put two runners on with two outs. A hard looping line drive to the shortstop Suda was caught to end the game with the lead run at the plate.

Korus went 2 for 3 while Powell, Brown, and Weatherly added one hit each. McConnville's triple was the best hit of the game.

Williams, Burkey, Andrew Messersmith, Suda, Lashley, and Kalan and Connor Stamm all added hits to the game for the Sox.

Game 15: Lifetime Eyecare Red Sox 9, McCook Clinic Yankees 8

In the elimination bracket championship the Red Sox put up a 4 run 1st inning while the Yankees put up 2 runs.

The 2nd saw the Yankees narrow the gap by another run. Both teams scored 1 run in the 3rd.

The Yankees put up 4 runs on 4 hits in the 4th while the Red Sox added 3 runs on 4 hits to keep it tied at 8.

The Red Sox scored 1 in the 5th to break the tie and retired the side in the bottom of the inning to advance to the championship game against the Braves.

Backer went 3 for 4 while Post and Kircher went 2 for 3. Sis, Ian Pearson, and Ulmer added hits in the Yankees' effort to advance. Burkey and Conner Stamm went 3 for 3 while Suda went 2 for 3.

Williams, Kalan Stamm, and McConnville added hits to help advance the Red Sox to the championship bracket versus the Braves.

Championship Bracket Game 1: Lifetime Eyecare Red Sox 16,

Wells Fargo Braves 5

A single run inning in the 1st inning for the Red Sox was matched by a 5 run inning for the Braves.

The Red Sox added another run in the 2nd while only giving up a walk in the 2nd inning. The Red Sox added 3 more runs in the 3rd to tie the game.

The 4th saw the Red Sox put up 9 runs to lead 13-5 going into the 5th. In the top of the 5th the Red Sox added 2 more runs to end the game. Williams homered in the winning effort for the Red Sox.

Burkey and Suda went 2 for 4 with both Stamms going 1 for 3. Lance Garcia added a hit in the winning effort.

Matt Collicott tripled while Rathe, Taylor, and Mitch Collicott doubled for the Braves. Daniel Peck, Trenton Bruntz, and Spilinek singled.

The win by the Red Sox in this elimination game gave the Braves their 1st loss requiring a second match-up to determine the tournament champion.

Championship Game 2: Lifetime Eyecare

Red Sox 16,

Wells Fargo Braves 12

The Red Sox put 2 on the board to start the top of the 1st in the elimination game.

The Braves went 4 up 3 down in the 2nd while the Red Sox put up 9 runs helped by a grand slam home run by McConnville to lead the Braves 11-2.

The 3rd was rather quiet with the Braves putting up 1 run and the Red Sox held scoreless.

The Braves rallied in the bottom of the 4th scoring 8 runs after holding the Red Sox scoreless in a second straight inning.

The 5th saw the Red Sox post 5 more runs to total 16 runs in the game.

In the bottom of the 5th with the tying run in the on deck circle, the Red Sox carded an out to finish the game 16-12.

Mitch Collicott doubled three times in the game while Spilinek, Bruntz, Taylor, and Matt Collicott went 2 for 3.

The Red Sox had Williams go 3 for 3 with 2 doubles and a single. McConnville, Suda, and Lashley went 2 for 3 in the winning effort.

Garcia, Burkey, and Kalan Stamm all hit as well.
