Planners to consider cell tower, beauty salon

Saturday, July 7, 2007
The McCook Planning Commission will consider granting special requests for a cell phone tower and a beauty salon, both in residential areas, at their regular meeting Monday, 5:15 p.m., in the City Council Chambers at Memorial Auditorium.

Viaero Wireless would like to install a 100-foot self support lattice microwave tower on property north of West Fourth and west of Washington Street, currently being used as pasture land.

The property, behind the Ted and Dixie Bethel residence at 1802 W. Fourth, will continue to used for grazing land for livestock. Viaero will purchase the land from the Bethels if the tower is permitted.

Equipment on the property will include the tower, a small building, a back-up generator and a buried propane tank. A chain link fence will surround the tower with three rows of barbed wire fence. The area is currently surrounded by trees and a canyon.

The tower will allow Viaero to triangulate with two other towers within the city.

If approved, the special exception will go to the McCook City Council for approval.

Viaero has tried twice before to install a tower in this general area without success. The McCook City Council denied the special exception both times on the grounds that the tower didn't conform to special exception considerations, such as compatibility with adjacent properties.

Commission members will also consider the request from Feona Berry for a special exception for a beauty salon she'd like to locate at 1307 West J. The property is zoned as a residential medium density mobile home district and the building is not occupied at this time.

According to her request, a curb will be cut out to allow easy entrance and exit. A maximum of six stylists will be working at the salon and additional parking will be available for employees and customers behind the house.

City staff members recommmend that both the requests be approve.
