July 18, 1930 - May 28, 2007

KEARNEY -- Edith Margaret (Smith) Leach born to Lolita Berniece (Jones) and James Lewis Smith on July 18, 1930, died May 28, 2007, at the home of her daughter Sherry Stansberry in Kearney.

During her childhood, Edith and family lived comfortably for many years throughout the Depression by supplementing their lifestyle with hunting, fishing, and trapping along the Missouri River in the Omaha/Council Bluffs area. Edith often shared wonderful memories of those years and frequently passed on a fascinating variety of skills she'd acquired as she journeyed through life.

She married DeLoy (Swede) Leach in 1946, and was the mother of three children, Dennis Ray, Donald DeLoy, and Sherryl Ann. During their marriage, they lived in several communities before settling in Arapahoe in 1962 where Edith continued to live until 2006.

Edith was especially proud of her personal achievements and community involvement. As a Cub Scout Den Mother, Boy Scout Leader, and later Girl Scout Leader, Edith enjoyed teaching the skills of living off the land and sharing her appreciation for nature with the youth under her tutelage.

She previously served as community coordinator for the Easter Seal Society, was a past member of the Arapahoe Women's Club, and a member of the United Methodist Church.

Following her stroke in the early 70s, Edith steadfastly lived by the credo "this is simply a challenge to conquer" by earning her GED and becoming certified in CPR while continuing to live independently in her home.

She loved to talk, read, and learn new things. She liked arts-n-crafts, hands-on activities, and was an excellent gardener who inspired many others with her knowledge and experience. Stoic as always, she was alert and of sound mind to the end.

Edith was preceded in death by her mother and father; sister Betty (Smith) Neff; ex-husband, DeLoy Leach and son Donald on Feb. 24, 2003, as a result of exposure to agent orange during the VietNam conflict.

She leaves to mourn her passing her son, Dennis and wife, Francis of Morrison, Colo.; daughter, Sherry and fiancée, Billy; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and friend, Susan Leach of Ord.

Services will be 10:30 am on June 8, 2007, at the United Methodist Church in Arapahoe with Sister Mary Ellen Comiskey officiating.

Memorials are to the Freedom Wall in Arapahoe Nebraska.

Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
