Making new memories

Memorial Day Weekend -- one last chance to spend some time at the lake with Jeremy, fishing, swimming, catching some rays … it sounded like the perfect plan.

The perfect plan, that is, until we delivered our camper to the lake Wednesday night. As we pulled into Trail 4 at Harry Strunk Lake, north of Cambridge, we could see the campground littered with campers of every shape, size and condition. Children played Frisbee behind the trailers and grown ups worked on getting everything set up for the long weekend.

I know this weekend will be memorable. I'm going to hate every minute of it.

I've always enjoyed finding the most isolated camping spot possible and avoiding human contact with anything walking on two legs. I've never cared for large groups of people. I don't care for sharing a shower and a bathroom with complete strangers, and I'd much rather listen to the birds singing and the frogs croaking than a bunch of children screaming, hollering and crying and their parents spending the day yelling at them.

Actually, it probably won't be all that bad, we have the barge where we can spend most of the day, which should be enjoyable, considering there will most likely be another boat within 20 feet of us all the entire time we're out on the lake.

I know the guys are looking forward to the camping trip. It will mean four days that I will be forced to cook them a home cooked meal that doesn't come from the freezer section of the grocery store.

It also means they won't be forced to make a nightly trip to the local convenience store for diet soda and cigarettes.

At least two of the three of us will have a pleasant weekend.

Jeremy has the perfect fishing spots picked out -- the spots where we'll find every kind of fish imaginable -- walleye, wipers, bass, northern pike -- you name it he knows where to find it, or so I've heard for the last week or more.

Yep, this is a weekend Jeremy most likely won't soon forget. Mostly because he'll be going to boot camp with a sunburn, an extra 10 pounds and -- with a little luck -- one of the biggest fish stories he'll ever have the pleasure of telling.

Personally, I'll just be glad to get back to work on Tuesday, relax and get away from all the noise and stress. It'll be like taking a vacation from our vacation.
